Mystery Solved!

| | Comments (0)

A month ago, when talking about Metronation's new signature line of candles and soaps we said,

The soap is made from "french-milled goat's milk", the candle from a soy blend. Wonder how french-milled goat's milk is different than regular goat's milk?  Yeah, us too - but it sounds better, doesn't it?

Well, when we stopped in the store the other day, George at Metronation was all too eager to tell us what exactly that difference is.  Apparently, french milling rids the soap of air, making a dense soap that keeps its form and doesn't goop all over your soap tray.  Pretty cool...and it goes to show what we know (not much).

If you have your heart set on some french-milled goat's milk soap or one of their signature fragrance candles (which we highly recommend), make sure to tell the staff.  The signature series had to be moved to the backroom to make room for Metronation's Christmas gear (yes, it is that time already).

Want high-end hard to find retro furniture and have the fat wallet necessary to get it?  Enter BlueRocketModern.  BRM, based out of a Central Parkway warehouse in the West End, specializes in Mid-Century and Hollywood Regency furniture.  Says Cin Weekly:

Although [BRM owner, Andrew] Cape missed being alive during the "modern" furniture style era by almost two decades, he's made up for the loss in his Cincinnati furniture business, BlueRocketModern, located in a West End warehouse. Here, Cape has a revolving stock of about 50 vintage pieces from the late 1940s to early 1980s from auctions and collections he pursues non-stop throughout the country.

Pieces run anywhere from $250-$12,000.  If you want to go check out the BlueRocketModern's stock, be sure to call ahead - they are only open by appointment.

What's the deal?

A hat can tell you a lot about a person.  So, picking a hat that tells the world exactly who you are can be a bit tricky.  Should you go the adventurous route with a wide-brimmed colorful one, or show your classy side with something a bit more refined?  Good thing Pangaea has this hat tree front and center just as you walk in.  As you can see, there's quite a bit of variety going on here, so you should be able to find something that suits your style (or the style you are trying to cop).

Perfect for?

Funky urban women (guys should check some place else for hats - Batsakes anyone?).

Where to get it?

Pangaea Trading Co. Ludlow Business Disrict (3226 Ludlow to be exact), 45220.  When you are done, you can always stop in Sitwell's for a coffee - they're located right next door.

How much will it cost?

15 to 30 buckaroonies.

Crazy Love (new release 10/16/07)

Review by Jessica @ bughouse video

I feel wrong, numb, and hauntingly confused. Why did I sit through 92 minutes of wrong-ness, what compelled me, and why did I really ENJOY this documentary? Answer: This story is just too crazy to NOT be true that it was hard to peel my eyes away (obvious pun not intended). Late 1950’s: Cute young Brooklynite Linda Riss catches the eye of an older thirty-something Burt Pugach while he was driving down the street one day; he can’t get her out of his head and pursues her with the tenacity of…well, a crazy person. Burt wines and dines Linda for several years, wooing her with his lawyerly wealth and celebrity connections (me thinks Linda wanted his money as she is getting ready to marry this guy)…until Linda finally figures out why there will be no wedding bells – Burt is already married – oh the horror!

Madras 641: Designer Shirts

What's the deal?

Bet you didn't know Cincinnati has its own designer fashion line.  Well, as of October 5, we do.  Madras 641 is a collaboration between co-owners in Cincy, Pennsylvania and DC to create a line of Indian-inspired shirts for men and women.  Launched earlier this month at Bajon Salon in West Chester, M641 is just getting started, but we like what we see so far.  The shirts manage to be distinctive and interesting, without being cheesy or overwhelming.

Perfect for?

People that are fashion and budget-conscious.  Also, models with extremely curly hair.

Where to get it?

Bajon Salon in West Chester is the place to go for immediate gratification.  However, M641 plans on getting their designer duds into more local boutiques soon. Which is good, becuase the scooter ride from downtown to West Chester is not a pleasant one.

How much will it cost?

Between $40 and $60 per shirt.

Perfect for?

Those in a Lord of the Rings fan club.

Where to find it?

Think Tower Place is all Food Court and TJ Maxx?  Think again.  Look for Midnight Muse there Tues through Saturday noon to 6pm - 28 W. Fourth, 45202.

How much will it cost?

'Bout a buck fifty.

You would think that a not-so-great script, sub-par acting, and a budget of $25k would render this film virtually forgotten in the scrap heap of “first films”…but there’s so much more to experience and appreciate in Mala Noche, Gus van Sant’s first feature film. Tim Streeter stars as Walt, a clerk at the local liquor/convenience store in the seedy Old Town section of Portland, Oregon who falls hard for an illegal Mexican immigrant teenager (Johnny).

Mustard Seed Boutique

What's the deal?

For guys, it can be difficult to find a good, stylish pair of jeans.  When you want a little better than Gap can give you, but don't want to pay three figures, you might find yourself searching for a while.  That's why we're always glad to stop in Mustard Seed Boutique.  Mustard Seed has some of the coolest consignment and vintage threads for men and women with a price point all the UC students can dig.

Where to find it?

No longer in the Ludlow Garage, Mustard Seed has stayed on Ludlow, but moved across the street.  311 Ludlow Ave, 45220.

How much will it cost?

Much less than the designer stores the clothes came from.  Expect to pay between $25-$55 for men's jeans and $20-$40 for mens's shirts.  The women's selection is priced similarly, however with the larger women's selection (guys always get the shaft), you can sometimes find an even better deal.
