Crazy Love (new release 10/16/07)
Review by Jessica @ bughouse video
I feel wrong, numb, and hauntingly confused. Why did I sit through 92 minutes of wrong-ness, what compelled me, and why did I really ENJOY this documentary? Answer: This story is just too crazy to NOT be true that it was hard to peel my eyes away (obvious pun not intended). Late 1950’s: Cute young Brooklynite Linda Riss catches the eye of an older thirty-something Burt Pugach while he was driving down the street one day; he can’t get her out of his head and pursues her with the tenacity of…well, a crazy person. Burt wines and dines Linda for several years, wooing her with his lawyerly wealth and celebrity connections (me thinks Linda wanted his money as she is getting ready to marry this guy)…until Linda finally figures out why there will be no wedding bells – Burt is already married – oh the horror!
Cut to the chase – Linda cuts all ties with Burt, the only common sense so far in this documentary, so Burt hires some local thugs to throw acidic lye onto Linda’s face…”if I can’t have you, no one can, and when I get through with you no one will want you”…Ok, so now she’s blind (mostly). The newspaper tabloids have a field day with this, Burt is found guilty and sent to Attica and Linda gets back to trying to move on with her life. You’ve probably heard snippets of this story before, but for those who haven’t I’ll just cut-off right here so as to not create any huge spoilers.
