Old School Cincinnati: Bromwell's

BuyCincy is excited to annouce a new column highlighting Cincinnati small businesses that have been serving the city for over 75 years: Old School Cincinnati. To kick off this new feature, we head to the current king of Old School Cincinnati, Bromwell's, the city's oldest business.
What's the deal?
Bromwell's recently finished with a complete renovation of their 4th St. space, completing a modern transformation of a company that has been in business since 1819. You owe it to yourself to stop in the showroom and stand, jaw agape, at the 14 foot back wall made entirely of wood logs. When you are able to close your mouth and move on, it is quite a show. Not only is the restored building itself a sight to see, but the fireplaces - oh, the fireplaces, so many fireplaces (some of which are exclusive in Ohio and Kentucky to Bromwell's - such as London-based Chesney). So, we thought a few examples of some of the coolest products in the store was in order.
This particular fireplace will be showing up all over the Ascent in a few months. Not only will it be in the common area of the building, but it is a buyer's option for the condos as well. It doesn't have to be vented outside either, the gas burns so cleanly that harmful gases are kept to an absulte minimum.

This was really cool, a collection of mantels made from reclaimed 400-500 year old hardwood found in Indiana. Most of these came from old barns that were torn down in Indiana, and feature types of wood that have since vanished from the area.

Outside fireplaces just rock. Jeffrey McClorey, the owner of Bromwell's was telling us about a particular installation where Bromwell's was putting an outside fireplace in a smaller backyard. The owner wanted some a privacy wall in addition, so Bromwell's built a stone wall like the one above, and placed the outdoor fireplace right on it to match. I think I could deal with something like that.
Perfect for? New downtown condo-owners.
Where to find it? 117 W. 4th St, downtown Cincinnati, 45202. Be sure to check out their newly renovated second floor showroom, some of which had been vacant since the 1870s.
Of note: Bromwell's used to manufacture fireplace accessories as well as sell them. In his office, McClorey has a set of Bronwell's chimney brooms that he restored. They were featured in the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago.
