We're very happy to have Cincinnati independent record store extraordinaire, Shake-It Records, drop some music knowledge around the BuyCincy grounds.  Check back for regular columns from Billy Carter of Shake-It.

What's Shaking - 1/5/08

RECORDS I LIKED A LOT IN 2007.
(And 1 Sentence about each of them)

Stars of the Lid - And The Refinement Of the Decline
-this is the sound your subconscience will hear as you exhale the very last breath of your life.

Grinderman - S/T
-Nick Cave and 3 other lumberjacks/homeless men murder their instruments via love gone wrong.

Pissed Jeans - Men Of Hope
-an audio stomachache of beautiful dis-tastefulness.

NO AGE - Weirdo Rippers
-two dorks sat in their apartment and made a really crappy sounding jigsaw puzzle of sounds: Genius.

The National - Boxer
-regular fellas make exceptionally good music minus dip-shit fashion trends (Got that Interpol?)

High On Fire - Death is Communion
-if a giant heard of storming elephants played electric guitars....and worshiped Motorhead.
Qui - Love's Miracle
-like getting mugged by a rabid clown with Downs syndrome....but in a loving way.

Major Stars - Mirror/Messenger
-long time modern psych-rock vets cut to the chase, then cut away from the chase, then go back.

Buffalo Tom - Three Easy Pieces
-1st album in nearly 10 years was pure pop hooks from beginning to end, even with the slight touch of Jesusy-ness, is a winner.

Band Of Horse - Cease To Begin
-the best Guided By Voices cover band working today!

Weakerthans - Reunion Tour
-they're from Canada and only make a record every 4-5 years....attn: all English Majors.

Steve Earle - Washington Square Serenade
-the aire apparent to the Kris Kristopher crown of righteous twang n' bang.

Wussy - Left For Dead
-conflict of interest....says who?

Levon Helm - Dirt Farmer
-one of rock's greatest voices back away from oblivion and puts it on tape at least one more time.

Polyphonic Spree - The Fragile Army
-the guilty pleasure of 2007 if digging big, fat, Bowie (think Hunky Dory) riffs makes you guilty.

Patton Oswald - Werewolves & Lollipops
-it's a comedy album and I laughed my ass off the EIGHT time I heard it.

Robyn Hitchcock - Box Set Sampler  ----not really a record per say, but it's stunning to hear all those great songs back-to-back.

Charlie Louvin - Live At Shake It Records ----my favorite album by a goddamn country music legend recorded at my place of employment.......of 2007.

- Billy Carter
