Leap year is making its mark this weekend, and Cincinnati's taking advantage of it. This week we have two fine options to ring in the leap year.

Please keep in mind that if your organization/band/art gallery/restaurant/store is having any events in the future we'd love to help get the word out. Send us an email at dan@buycincy.com. Hit the jump for this weekend's recommendations:

Lots of excitement this week in and around Over-the-Rhine.

First, Building Cincinnati reports on the recent opening of the Boost! meeting space (pictured above) in Pendleton.  The 4600 square foot space promises "flexible space bursting with natural sunlight, hardwood floors, exposed brick, non-traditional and traditional meeting furniture and distinct decor."  In other words, not the same old corporate meeting place.

UrbanCincy covers the opening of Lavomatic (featured in BuyCincy here).  Of the new Jean-Robert joint, they had to say:
Simply Stunning. My entree and dessert of salmon on a bed of couscous, and crème Brule, were just as spectacular. Also the wine selection was very small, but I was told that they will be expanding it before the weekend. With entrees between 12-24 dollars it is probably the most affordable of Jean Robert's places. I honestly can't wait to go back and sit on the terrace.
We stopped by Wed. night and can't stop saying good things about the it, the atmosphere and food are a great addition to the city's dining scene.

UrbanCincy also mentions tonight's re-opening of Grammer's bar (after many years of abandonment) on the corner of Walnut and Liberty in OTR, a place it terms "a true Cincinnati gem".  Want more?  Check out our good friend Stepfanie's video report about Grammer's for the Enquirer.
Voting for CityBeat's "Best of Cincinnati" ends in a few days, March 1 to be exact, and BuyCincy would love to have your vote for "Best Blog."  However, we are not just here to shamelessly plug ourselves.  There are plenty of local businesses out there that could use your support.  So, keep in mind your favorite local shops when voting - an award like this won't even register for the big chains, but it means the world to many a small business.  So, if you haven't yet, get on over to the CityBeat page and support your favorite places!

Boris Litwin Jewelers

| | Comments (0)
litwin.JPGBJ Foreman's great-grandfather was a jeweler to the Czar of Russia. When he moved to America he taught his son Boris how to make jewelry and together, in 1913, they founded The Litwin Company. Although the company is now known as Boris Litwin Jewelers, the Cincinnati business has since been handed down four generations of the family line, and they still continue to sell unique and quality custom jewelry.

As if their history and their hand crafted Cincinnati charms weren't enough to prove that this business is rooted in Cincinnati pride, former Cincinnati Post art critic and current owner, BJ Foreman has now expanded Litwin's repertoire to include the works of artist Diana Duncan Holmes. Holmes reworks digital snapshots of Cincinnati ranging from the famous to the less seen treasures (take for instance the back of 8th Street buildings.) The photos are then layered on wallpaper leaving an antiqued touch with just a hint of the wallpaper patterns showing through.

What's the deal?

A couple of weeks ago we told you that local bakers Embrace Sweets were planning to open a retail gig in Over-the-Rhine.  Well, we had the pleasure of meeting with Brandi from Embrace recently and found out a little more about their plans to bring fresh brownies to the Gateway Quarter.

Embrace was started in 2003 by Sandra and Brandi Daniels as a way to "get out of the corporate world" and do what they loved.  So, Sandra built on her cooking background and started baking....and baking, and baking.  However, they wanted to make sure their sweets not only were high quality, but 100% natural.  Cheap, unhealthy ingredients "were never an option."  Said Brandi, "We use the ingredients our grandparents used...ingredients you can pronounce."  The duo quickly expanded, offering scones, cookies, and buckeyes, but they are known above all for their brownies.  And brownies are what you will find when they open up this Spring.

Welcome back to Sale Sunday, your weekly where-to-get-the-deals column. If you are a shopowner and are interested in having your sale appear in Sale Sunday contact us at kristi@buycincy.com. As always, read on for more information on this week's sales, featuring deals from Metronation, Litwin's, and Park + Vine.
enjoyyourweekend.jpgAt this point the Valentine's Day paraphernalia is already being replaced with Cadbury Eggs and pastel baskets on store shelves. This weekend will be a prime opportunity to get deeply discounted candy hearts, as well as some entertainment that doesn't have to be brimming with romanticism.

Please keep in mind that if your organization/band/art gallery/restaurant/store is having any events in the future we'd love to help get the word out. Send us an email at dan@buycincy.com. Hit the jump for this weekend's recommendations:

What's the deal?

Christian Moerlien and Little King earring.  Or, as we like to call them - beerings.  Local crafter and Mount Notre Dame student Emily Bolte started making bottle cap earrings as a hobby last summer, and they soon became a hit with friends and family.  "When my Irish family would get together for summer reunions, I would collect the different caps from their multiple drinks and punch holes into them to make earrings.  It wasn't until later when my different family members asked me to make them some earrings with bottle caps from their favorite beers."

roses.jpg
What's the deal?

Our good friends over at City Roots are usually more geared towards urban gardening (and awesome bonsai trees) than floristry.  But, this time of year, cut flowers are in demand, and although you could get your flowers from some dude on a corner, don't expect that to exude amore.  Instead, show some heart (har har) and get flowers from people who know plants.  For the next few days, City Roots will be carrying single stem and rose arrangements to help you (or the recipient) get in the Valentine's Day mood.
faigle 1.JPEG If you're looking for quality that lasts this Valentine's season stop here because I've found it. Just ask my mom, for instance, who still raves about the service she received at Faigle Jewelers twenty-nine years ago. Opened three generations ago in 1946, Joseph Faigle and Sons Jewelers is still owned and operated by family. Faigle offers a large selection of jewelry ranging from the classic to the abstract, and although they do a ton of ready to purchase jewelry, at least 50% of what they offer is handmade custom work.
luckystep2.jpg
What's the deal?

Yesterday the Gateway Quarter welcomed yet another store to its confines, the home furnishings and accessories store A Lucky Step.  The grand opening celebration was as unique as you will see for a retail store.  Sure, on the inside the usual combination of browsing customers and catered hors d'evours set the stage.  However, outside the store, the Federation of Black Cowboys shook things up by trotting around OTR and giving horseback rides around the adjacent parking lot.

Unfortunately, we didn't get a shot of the cowboys (at the time we were taking a "backstage" tour of the Gateway Quarter condos with a small army of Cincinnati bloggers), but we did come back to give you a quick view of what to expect inside A Lucky Step.

Another week has slipped away landing us one step closer to spring (although not according to the groundhog) and right on the doorstep of new sales. This weeks sales feature High Street, Shoetopia, and Park + Vine. If you are a shopowner and are interested in having your sale appear in Sale Sunday e-mail us at kristi@buycincy.com. As always, keep reading for information on this weeks sales.

MarbleHill.jpg

What's the deal?

You always seem to end up going to "insert generic Italian restaurant here" with and giving "insert requisite store-bought chocolates and grocery store flowers here" to your significant other on Valentine's Day, each year's festivities coalescing into the previous year's, never taking the plunge for that one-of-a-kind experience Cupid's been begging for. This year, skip dinner and head straight to dessert at Marble Hill Chocolatier in the beautiful O'Bryonville shopping district.

enjoyyourweekend.jpgValentine's Day is merely a week away and we have a feeling that our male constituents are still trying to figure out just what to do, but the weekend won't wait regardless of procrastination, so we're happy to offer our suggestions this week, as well as remind our readers to come back daily for VDay ideas.

Please keep in mind that if your organization/band/art gallery/restaurant/store is having any events in the future we'd love to help get the word out. Send us an email at dan@buycincy.com. Hit the jump for this weekend's recommendations:
paolo v-day.JPG

Overwhelmed by shopping for jewelry? This Valentine's Day, instead of taking a shot in the dark at what that special someone wants, try things the Paolo way. Men, all you have to do is pick out a loose gemstone, diamond, or unstrung strand of pearls, and then let the Paolo jewelry design certificate do the rest. Paolo will wrap the chosen gift along with the design certificate, and after the gift has been presented they will set up a date for you and your loved-one to come in and create a beautiful piece of jewelry...exactly how she wants it!

There are a few things that get our heart racing here at BuyCincy: chief among them a good cup of coffee, the Findlay Market waffle guy, a pint of Christian Moerlein on draft, and local chocolatiers.  Well, CityBeat just sampled four local sweets masters (it's a tough job, but someone has to do it) from Bellevue to Montgomery to help you make someone's Valentine's Day.

Freida's Desserts in Madeira (featuring a killer Peanut Butter Crunch pastry),  Marble Hill in O'Bryonville (one of our favorites), Schneider's Sweet Shop in Bellevue (the best old-school candy shop in the area), and Haute Chocolate in Montgomery (signatures include truffles, brownies and Bodacious Buckeyes) were all visited - and, no surpise, the CityBeat folks came away with good reviews and a bit of a sugar high.

Note to area chocolatiers: we gladly accept free samples.

B & D Goats

goats.jpg
Most adorable photo in BuyCincy history.

What's the deal?

A family can only drink so much milk.  And, when your family raises dairy goats, that can be a problem.  Instead of throwing the excess milk away, Diane Emmich went looking for other ways to use more than a gallon of milk that her goats produced every day.  So, Diane started tinkering with goat's milk soap recipes she found online.  Soon, she had the perfect soap recipe and was ready to spread the love - B&D Goats was born.

embracevday.jpgWhat's the deal?

Step away from the Russell Stover box.  We repeat, step away from the Russell Stover box.  If you really want to make an impression on Valentine's Day, you should leave the cheap chocolates behind and give some real chocolate goodness - Embrace Sweets brownies.  "Give Your Heart Away Brownie Bites" is a sampler from the local brownie experts featuring 9-20 bite size pieces all wrapped up in a heart-shaped box.
Your sampler could include the following flavors: Triple Chocolate Chunk, Chunky Walnut, Toffee Almond Crunch, Butter Pecan, Peanut Butter 'Buckeye' Blitz, Raspberry Soiree, Hot Chocolate (Aztec Spicy), Kona Buzz (Espresso), Cheesecake.
