Instead of raining men (amen), it's about to start raining tax rebate
checks all over America. More than 130 million household will
receive between $300 and $1200 in order to help jumpstart the health of
our economy. However, where and what you spend your tax rebate
check on (assuming you, like a majority of Americans will not take that
check straight to the bank) can drastically impact where the economy is boosted. Sure, those tax refund specials from large multinational retailers are awfully tempting, but the economic health of your neighborhood, city and country are at stake.

That's right. Get your daily dose of inane minutia (although if you are on Twitter already, you know all about that) and BuyCincy post updates. Cincinnati twitterites can follow us at twitter.com/BuyCincy.

It may be extremely hard to believe, but regardless of what you believe, we've already reached the Final Friday of the month again. There will be plenty of worthwhile places to visit tonight, but the Pendleton is always a great place to start. Also, this Saturday BuyCincy writer Jordan Neff is playing with Mark Utley and Magnolia Mountain at the Comet, so stop by and say hello! Details after the jump:

The last month has been a busy one here at BuyCincy HQ. On top of taking home 2 "Best of Cincinnati" award from CityBeat, we have added two new stellar writers to the fold: Jordan Neff and Stepfanie Romine. We've also been working on a couple parts of the site away from the main page that we though you might want to know about.
One, we have put another update into our local shop directory to add information about Duttenhofer's , Linden Noll, OUTSIDE, Campus Cyclery and Avril Bleh among others, check out the full directory here. And two, we would like to give a shout to Reser Bicycle, who a few weeks ago posted a blurb about themselves on the BuyCincy wiki. We are encouraging business owners to sign up for our wiki (its free!) and post a little information about their stores to help us spread the word about the plethora of great Cincinnati owned businesses. If you know a business owner that might be interested, send them over!
BarrelHouse Brewery began as a brewpub in Over the Rhine with an immense selection of locally brewed, handcrafted beer. Operating as such from 1995 until 2005, BarrelHouse is now a full-fledged brewery in West End with distribution across Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. We at BuyCincy were afforded the opportunity of a tour and interview at this local craft brewery.

Just a quick reminder that Earth Day is tomorrow, April 22 and some of our favorite shops have special eco-friendly events going on both tomorrow and throughout the week.
- Nicholas Gallery, Park + Vine,
Artworks and Below Zero are teaming up to present an event that
combines art, music and vodka into one tidy (or not so tidy depending
on how much vodka is involved) package. This Friday (Final Friday
for April), the 25th, "Nonsense to Greensense" kicks off with recycled
art from the Art-O-Matic and music from Jake Speed and the Freddies at
Artworks, music and eco-friendly art at Park + Vine and Nicholas
Gallery (featuring our good friend and soon to be BuyCincy contributor, Maya Drozdz, among others) and an afterparty featuring 360 vodka, "the world's first
eco-friendly vodka" at Below Zero. Our little Earth Day advice,
nine times out of ten, locally-produced items are more Earth-friendly
than traditional "eco-friendly" products (less transport equals less carbon emissions), so feel free to celebrate Earth Day with
Cincinnati's very own Woodstone Creek vodka, which we believe is also available at Below Zero.

Guess what? In case you hadn't noticed; earthquakes aside, it's nice out! Cincinnati has, as far as I'm concerned, some of the best parks I've been to, and what better way to enjoy your weekend than to visit them? If you have a canine companion, why not let them go wild at the Mt. Airy Dog Park? How about a round of Frisbee Golf (Frolf) at Winton Woods? Or, take a trip down to Eden Park for the opening of the Butterfly Garden at Krohn Conservatory. It's nice to buy(into)cincy, but sometimes you just need to enjoycincy.(com?).Visit the general Cincinnati Parks website to find one a park close to you, and enjoy yourself.
What's the deal?
This Saturday independent record stores across the states are throwing a party for themselves, and you're invited. Record Store Day is a day to celebrate the invaluable role of the mom & pop record store to any city's local music scene: local bands are able to find shelf space, music enthusiasts are able to track down that long lost import album with their help, and we all know big box and vinyl don't mix. They are one of the main arteries that keeps music pumping through our hearts.
It's never been easy though.
Smaller budgets and less shelf space mean that indie record stores have to be more selective in what they carry in-store, less buying power means generally higher prices for the end customer, and the advent of EBay and Amazon coupled with lower general CD sales has been a strong blow to the industry.
That's why it's more important than ever to support your local record store. Hit the jump to find out where you can head locally this Saturday to pick up a new (or old) album, along with some great deals coinciding with Record Store Day.

Our good friend Ina from Madras 641, a designer fashion company with roots in Cincinnati (which BuyCincy previously covered), just shot us a note that her Spring 08 line is now at the Mustard Seed Boutique on Ludlow Ave. Mustard Seed is the second local boutique to our knowledge to pick up the line, with Bajon Salon in West Chester carrying the line since its debut last fall. Christie at Mustard Seed confirmed that the store is carrying pieces from both the men's and women's lines, so dudes and ladies alike can stop by and check them out.

The world of biking seems daunting to many who've only enjoyed its more recreational side, but Cincinnati's Campus Cyclery has something for any kind of customer. Right off of UC's campus, Campus Cyclery has a selection of 200+ bikes and a knowledgeable staff that will help you with any of your biking needs. "We have a full range of bikers here: commuters to racers," Glenn Wolf, owner of 25 years says. Campus Cyclery has been in business for 35 years, always at its Clifton Heights location.

An inevitable cooldown looms over the weekend, but it's no reason to not enjoy Cincinnati this weekend. It's a weekend for music on both sides of the river. Hit the jump to see this week's recommendations:

Just because you live in the city doesn't mean you have turned your back on nature. And, just because you embrace the outdoors doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style. OUTSIDE, newly opened on 12th St. in the Gateway Quarter of Over-the-Rhine, has a goal to help you find modern, stylish outdoor furniture and accessories suitable for dressing up your yard, patio, or even fire escape. What to find in the store? A ton of planters, birdfeeders, garden decor, outdoor serving sets, furniture and some really cool looking stainless steel grills. Although the store is geared towards urban outdoor areas, owner Terry Lee states that even those with larger yards should be able to find hip outdoor goods at the store.

A quick perusal of Linden Noll seems almost obligatory with any trip to MainStrasse. Hidden between Wertheim's and this neighborhood's many specialty shops is one of the best collections of old world crafts and gifts in the area. Owner and operator, Dolores Carpenter, said "I always thought there should be a shop with this here." We're sure you'll agree if you stop by this shop for a one of a kind gift or book.

Make sure to hit the jump this week to check out Kentucky's response to Ohio's final friday: First Fridays. Of note, Curtis Heuser, who we recently ran an article on, is giving a free tour of the home he remodeled and subsequently chronicled in "Living Canvas." Details are given in the press release below:

Duttenhofer's Books has been a staple of Clifton Heights for 33 years, though it's hard to believe it's only been that long. As soon as you walk into the door, vast and imposing shelves of aging texts confront you. They command respect, and for a moment, you might think you've entered a wonderful museum that lets you flip through every exhibit. Turning to the left, you'll find Russell Speidel, owner and operator of 22 years, happily perched behind a counter containing such oddities as a phrenology-diagramed head. He is happily at home amongst the many texts, "We have about 40,000 books in the store, give or take 4 to 5,000." There are no new books, which allows anyone to walk in and do some good old-fashioned impulse buying. "We don't carry textbooks," Russell told me. "We just want to provide good, quality books." This you'll find plenty of; Duttenhofer's has two floors filled with books on Literature, History, Biography, Art, Architecture, and some fun pop culture inspired items.
