Joseph Williams Photo Exhibition

June 29, 2008 in Uncategorized

Brian Neumann and Fred Arrowood hosted a fabulous Final Friday cocktail party that coincided with their exhibition by local photographer Tonya Cook.  “Tonya has long been drawn to the neglected and abandoned objects in our world, and her photography reflects this,” they said of her work. “Replete with forgotten vestiges and remnants, she poignantly captures the gritty and raw nuances of our past.” The photos were beautiful and incredibly powerful, and the store is equally impressive. Check it out.

Craving something sweet?  Put that Snickers bar down and drive over to Haute Chocolate Confectionary for an original creation, handmade right inside the shop!  Established in 1979 by owner Lisa Holmes, the little shop is a Cincinnati staple.  Some of the local favorites are white chocolate buckeyes and Lisa’s brownies (which can be shipped to long-distance friends).

Perfect For: Chocolate lovers!

Yat Ka Mein: Warm Your Soul with Noodles

June 26, 2008 in Uncategorized

Normally BuyCincy would have a picture of to accompany this review of a business. However, a torrential downpour made that all but impossible. But that deluge was serendipitous. If it hadn’t started raining, I wouldn’t have pulled off I-71 for a detour down Madison Road. And if that storm hadn’t happened, I never would have seen Yat Ka Mein in the distance.

Carteaux and Leslie: Book Smart

June 25, 2008 in Uncategorized

carteauxleslieshop001.jpg

Looking for the perfect gift for
your favourite bibliophile?  Look no
further than downtown’s own purveyor of out of print, first editions and
antiquarian books: Carteaux and Leslie.
In addition to the hundreds of books in the shop, reminiscent of great personal
libraries of a by-gone era, Carteaux and Leslie also offers custom framing
services.

Scott Carteaux is the classically
educated book buyer, and Tim Leslie, the partner of framing fame.  If you’re looking for a particular edition or
special book, just ask Scott to search for it.
Each request is treated like a special quest of Sherlockian
proportions.  He has recently acquired
part of an eclectic collection of mathematics and science volumes owned by the
gentleman who developed the chemical formula for Benadryl.  Where else could you hear such a great
anecdote?

Up Up and Away: A Comic Destination

June 24, 2008 in Stores

P1010004.jpg
According to Kendall Swafford, owner and operator of Up Up and Away Comics, the character Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons isn’t just a stereotype.  It’s the truth.  “Everyone who’s ever bought a comic knows a clerk like that; someone rude, cocky, and unwilling to help.”  That is precisely what makes his store unique.

Flavors Eatery: A Bite of Whimsy

June 22, 2008 in Uncategorized

MENU_coffee.jpgHidden behind the garish fast food lights on Princeton-Glendale lies a charming lunch destination ready to welcome you with open arms.  With bright yellow walls, mismatching chairs and a cheerful staff, Flavors Eatery in Beckett Ridge has a whimsical spirit that’s difficult to miss.  The small cafe opened it’s doors two years ago to a slow start, but through word of mouth business has finally begun to pick up.  The menu offers a surprisingly wide variety of sandwiches, wraps and pizzas (there’s even a hummus section) with prices that range from $4 - $15.  Don’t forget to try one of their smoothies or espresso drinks when you visit, and remember to thank us when you take your first sip!  You can find Flavors Eatery at 8374 Princeton-Glendale Rd.  Hours of operation are: Monday – Friday 11:30 am to 8:00 pm, and Sunday 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Photo provided by: www.flavorseatery.com

BarrelHouse Bottles: No More?

June 19, 2008 in News

BHbottle.jpgWe spoke with several distributors who informed us that BarrelHouse has halted its new 22 oz. bottling line (installed only a year ago) to return to solely kegging their beer. Red Leg lovers, fear not, as the company plans to continue serving its craft beers in local bars throughout town.

:( Embrace Sweets Closes (But Stays Available Online)

June 17, 2008 in News

Hearing that Embrace Sweets will no longer have a physical presence in Cincinnati leaves some of the BuyCincy crew feeling like junkies.  Where will we get our blueberry scone fix!?  How will we manage without our weekly Embrace brownie!?  In a press release yesterday, Embrace announced that rising costs, not a lack of demand, has caused the closure their physical presence, and obviously halted their plans to open a brownie boutique in the Gateway Quarter.

I guess we will have to turn to the internets (through embracesweets.com and amazon.com) to feed our addiction, as fortunately Sandra and Brandi will continue virtual operations.  We are sad to see their goods leave store shelves, though, it was great to slip into Lookout Joe’s on 7th St. to grab a little sweetness in the morning, which always made for a great start to our day.

It’s a hit: Cincinnati E.A.T.S.

June 11, 2008 in Local Food, News, Restaurants

While this BuyCincy staffer might be slightly biased (I’m one of the organizers), the debut Cincinnati E.A.T.S. event at Lavomatic last night was fabulous! This multigenerational, casual dining club is sure to keep selling out.
