July 2008 Archives

If you're looking for fun this weekend, we've got it!  Take a gander at some of the awesome events happening around the city!

findlay_market_plaza.jpgGreetings from Findlay Market

Summer season is in full swing at Findlay Market!  The Farmers Market now boasts fresh summer vegetables and flowers.  The planting season was slow to get started due to heavy rains.  Now, fruits of our farmers' labor abound.  Worrying about buying tomatoes and other items that could be salmonella tainted?  Stop out to the farm shed and talk with the farmers.  They can tell you exactly how they plant and protect their crops.  Eat locally, know how your food was grown and support local farmers and businesses!

On August 1st, at the end of the day, we will be closing down our survey and picking a winner of our drawing. So if you haven't taken the survey yet, don't miss the opportunity. Not only will you be giving us valuable feedback on how we might make BuyCincy.com even better, you will be given the opportunity to win a BuyCincy t-shirt and a $20 gift certificate to Greater Cincinnati Independents.

So please take a few minutes for the survey and be sure to give us suggestions on more local businesses to visit. Then enter your name and email address at the end to be eligible for the drawing.

Deep beneath the surface of the Queen city lies a world untouched and abandoned.  Forgotten by all but a few, the dark labriynth has waited decades for its history to be told.  The day has come.
We want you to help us make BuyCincy a better resource for our readers and for Cincinnati's local shops, restaurants and bars. Our quick 5 minute survey will let you tell us how we can do a better job: suggest places we should visit and projects we should take on.  But, don't just do it for the betterment of our local shopping cause, do it 'cause you want some free swag.  We will be picking one lucky survey participant to win our grand prize: A brand new BuyCincy t-shirt and a $20 gift certificate to Greater Cincinnati Independents.

This Friday, BuyCincy unveils two brand spankin' new t-shirt designs* at Fountain Square's T-shirt Fest.  A great bunch of local companies will be down there spreading some t-shirt love - so we thought we would join in the fun.  In addition to our two designs, we will also be carrying shirts from the College Hill Coffee Co. and Findlay Market, so you can show your support for local businesses all in one place.

If you happen to find yourself downtown from 11am-2pm or from 5pm-10pm on Friday, be sure to stop by and say hi, and maybe even treat yourself to a BuyCincy tee.

*Assuming something doesn't go terribly wrong with our screenprinting.

And BuyCincy announces its first year of special coverage for the MPMF! We've set up a separate page where you can expect frequent updates, photos, and coverage of the festival that gives homage to the queen city's proud musical past. Check it out here: www.buycincy.com/mpmf2008.

This is a week of sorrow for Cincinnati.  One of our very best local musicians has lost her battle with cancer.

In the latest version of "you would never, ever get this at one of the big box stores" we bring you a heart-felt story that admittedly sounds a little like a sappy chain letter, however this is exactly why stores like Johnny's Toys are so important, and the value added benefits out way any slightly less discount prices that you would get at a box chain.

July 25th, 2008 will mark the last day of business downtown for M. Hopple & Co., a premier paper goods store based in Cincinnati.   The downtown location, in the Westin Hotel, has been open since 1981.  Their second location which will still be open, has been located in Kenwood since 1986.  We will miss the staff and the great paper products in the downtown area, but they'll still be available in the Cincinnati area.

Also, if you're a local artist, check out their website www.mhopple.com and look for the "A Call to All Artists".  Use your creativity to celebrate Cincinnati history, the site says.  It's the CityArt Holiday Card Contest...you could have your art, with a Cincinnati theme, made into a holiday card and sold at the M. Hopple & Co. stores and featured in the media. Submissions are due August 22.

nvision1.jpgWhat can you find at NVISION? A better question might be: what can't you find? The wares run the gamut from vintage to locally-designed, from clothing for men, women, and babies to home decor and all points in between. The best part? NVISION is having a massive sidewalk sale this weekend, 12-13 July!
After a couple month hiatus, Enzo's, the OTR coffeehouse/lunch spot is back up and running.  The menu looks very similar to the old one (mmmm....paninis), but still no evening hours: 7:00am to 2:00pm.  We assume that, like before, Enzo's will stay closed on the weekends, but we hope they decide to experiment with, at least, Sunday brunch.

f_justcured_phf12-300x168.jpgEvery month, our good friends at Cincinnati Locavore visit BuyCincy to give us the latest on locally-produced foods in the Greater Cincinnati area. Good eatings!

When I passed Michael Brown sampling his Just Cured salmon across from Luken's Fish, Poultry & Seafood at Findlay Market last month, I backed up to grab a sample. After I tasted it I wanted to grab a second, but that seemed greedy. So instead I introduced myself.

Michael, who lives in Western Hills even though neither he nor his wife grew up on the West Side, is curing some of the best salmon I've ever tasted onsite at Findlay Market in a sparkling clean custom-built smoke room across the street from the Lukens stand. It's a dream of his and his wife's, both lifelong foodies, to build a long-time hobby into a second career. When he recently left a big local law firm, they decided the time was right to see if his recipe for handcrafted salmon had legs.

I caught up with him one day while he dry-cured 25 pounds of his wonderful European-style cold-smoked salmon.

Shout_Alternative_Motive.jpgAlternative Motive announced that it will be premiering its new line of Cincinnati tees, titled "Who's your Nati?" at the July 18th T-Shirt Fest on Fountain Square. If these shirts are as popular as their predecessors, you'd better act quick to get your own. And, of course, they're darn cool.
Rohs1.jpgThe Rohs name is all over Cincinnati, but there are two things you might not know. First, it's pronounced "Russ," not "Rose." Second, and more importantly, you can still buy from the Cincinnati family's hardware store on Vine.
