Listermann’s: What’s Brewing in Cincinnati?

August 29, 2008 in Local Food

ListermannLabel01.jpgListermann’s has enjoyed a reputation as one of the tri-states’ finest brewery supply stores for over 15 years. The Listermann “Brewing Company”, however, was just premiered this past week. BuyCincy met up with brewers at a beer tasting last Saturday to try out their newly approved “Wild Mild Ale.”

Happy Birthday BuyCincy

August 28, 2008 in Uncategorized

A letter to our readers,

Tomorrow 8/29 is a big day for BuyCincy as we turn One year old.  Spurred on a year ago by the development happening in the Gateway Quarter, Sean decided to create BuyCincy as a way to bring light to these new businesses and other locally owned businesses throughout the city.  A few days later I joined him, and together we have spent the past year trying to do our best to bring you information about locally owned and operated businesses. Today we are fortunate to have an all volunteer staff of five additional Contributing Writers, and a Sales and Marketing Coordinator.  Over the past year we have seen steady growth in readership, have won two Best of Cincinnati Awards, and have received lots of positive press, none of which would have happened without You, our faithful readers.  For the past 12 months you have supported us and spread the word about our little venture, and for that we thank you.

We would also like to thank the businesses that have supported us and that have allowed us to support them.  We hope that we have been a help to you over the past year, and we hope to be of even greater help in the future.

This next year promises to be a big one for BuyCincy as we continue to grow.  Stay tuned for exciting changes, events and a greater focus on what got us here, supporting locally owned businesses and the people who make this city a wonderful place to live.

Thank you again for your support, and we look forward to serving you for many years to come.  Now get out there and shop, eat and participate!  Take advantage of all that this great city has to offer.

All the Best to You,

Kurt and Sean

OTR’s Bohemian Rebirth at the Iris Book Cafe

August 28, 2008 in Restaurants, Stores

Iris Book Cafe

A couple of weeks ago, the Iris Book Cafe opened quietly on Main St. in Over-the-Rhine, and the positive word-of-mouth is already spreading. Owner Julie Fay, who also owns Urban Eden up the street, has transformed this storefront into a sleek, sophisticated space with a very open feel. The muted tones of the interior lend themselves perfectly to the black-and-white photography exhibit lining the walls and contrast well with the eclectic used book selection, with its ratty, multi-hued spines.

The Locavore Report: Woodstone Creek Straight Bourbon Whiskey

August 21, 2008 in Local Food

bourbon.jpgWoodstone Creek’s Straight Bourbon Whiskey, made locally in Norwood at Ohio’s first microdistillery, debuted tonight at the Party Source’s Craft Spirit Tasting event in Covington.

Woodstone Creek is the first Ohio-made aged bourbon released since 1865. Bottles will be labeled with barrel number in limited edition releases one barrel at a time. Barrel #1 bottle #1 will be auctioned off September 6th at Gourmet Sensation to benefit Hospice of Cincinnati.
Based on the quality of Woodstone Creek’s Vodka, I intend to find a bottle soon.

Mecklenburg Gardens: Zinzinnati in Cincinnati

August 21, 2008 in Restaurants

bizSpot.jpgMecklenburg Gardens has been one of Cincinnati’s finest institutions since its inception in 1865. Patrons, menus, and neighborhoods have changed, but this spot in Corryville* remains a delightful look into Cincinnati’s past. The floor in front of the bar dips noticeably to reveal nearly 160 years of wear, and the wall is covered in photos of former patrons who seem to be saying “drink up!”

Javier’s Dinner Service: Coming Soon

August 19, 2008 in Restaurants

If it seems like its been a long time since we talked about Javier’s extending their hours for dinner and getting a liquor license, that’s because it has.  Think January.  Before Taste of Cincinnati, before Opening Day, and even before the Great Blizzard of 08.

However, The Cincinnati Blog is now reporting that Javier’s dinner service and bar will be up and ready in the next few weeks. The hours don’t look too shabby either, food service until 10pm and drinks until 2am.  We’re not sure yet if these are hours Mon-Sun, but we sure hope so. We loves us some Javier’s.
Address and map after the jump….
