Findlay Market is Open for Business

We received good news today from our friend Cheryl Eagleson at Findlay Market.  The Market is open for business!  She sent us details about the fire, the status of the buildings and even some news of up-coming events.

Hit the jump for the scoop and hit the Market for some shopping.  In the words of Cheryl "With all the drama around grocery stores not having food, etc. why not shop at the Market and avoid the mess!"

Greetings from Findlay Market

Cheryl Eagleson, Marketing Director

Findlay Market is Open for Business!

Thank you to everyone who has expressed their concern for the merchant community and the historic buildings in the Market Square that were damaged in the recent fire.  Six 19th century Italianate architectural structures have medium to light fire, smoke and water damage.

The good news is that neither the market house nor any of the businesses that occupy buildings in the Market Square are damaged.

We thank all our shoppers and the merchants for your amazing cooperation in an orderly and successful evacuation of the Market when the fires began.

We also thank firefighters from Engine Companies 21, 3, 12 and 17 for their bravery and effective efforts to extinguish fires from the buildings both on Elm Street and along the Market Square.

We want you to know that the Market has never lost electricity, is open regular hours and there is no interruption of business.

Please support these family owned businesses and shop Findlay Market!

The following is a brief description of events of Sunday afternoon to help you understand what happened:

Around 3:00 pm Sunday afternoon, strong winds peeled the roof off of the building M&F Market occupies on the SW corner of Elm and Elder Streets.  Large pieces of metal roof fell onto the power lines along Elder Street, causing a short.  The transformer on that corner exploded about 15 minutes later and sparks from that explosion set the M&F Market building on fire.

As it burned, windblown burning debris set a window frame on the Globe building on fire and started fires at Leader Furniture and two of the North Addition buildings.  There were, at one point, four fire companies and 18 fire trucks deployed around the market.  M&F Market is seriously damaged.  Leader Furniture appears not to have suffered structural damage, but there is extensive smoke and water damage to the interior and inventory and all the glass on the upper floors is broken out.

The Globe building lost one large window frame on the third floor, plate glass at street level, and glass in several other windows.  The North Addition building at 120 West Elder, behind Silverglades and Angelina, lost some upper floor windows.  The North Addition Building at 114 West Elder, suffered a roof fire and there is minor smoke and water damage on the first floor.  Eckerlin Meats was not damaged and will be able to reopen this week.

Numerous metal doors will have to be replaced because the fire department pried them open, and there is minor drywall damage in several areas as a result of the fire department's quick action.P1100287.JPG
