There's a new fitness trend every minute, but if you can't find time for a spinning-fusion-hot-yoga class, nothing beats a run. And when you're on that daily, weekly, or (in my case) semi-monthly run, it's key to have the right equipment.
With the opening of the fourth "Bob Roncker's Running Spot" in the Cincinnati area, there's another, local, place to get it.
Roncker has been a member of the local running scene for a long time. A former coach at both Elder and Walnut Hills High Schools, he moved into business with his first "Running Spot" Location in 1981. He features articles and info for local runners at his stores and his website, www.runningspot.com.
Roncker's stores sell shoes for running, cross training and walking, for both the experienced and beginning athlete. And their employees can do more than just find a different size in the storeroom.Earlier this year I spoke with Glendale manager Jeff Branhan, who's also head coach for cross country and track at St. Ursula High School.
At The Running Spot, he said employees try to get the whole picture of each customer who walks in, starting with their exercise history and habits - where they run, on what surfaces, how long and how often.
"We talk about goals... to keep them safe and make sure running is something they look forward to," he said.
Employees ensure runners have the right shoe by taking a look at how they walk. There's not just size to consider, but the shape of your foot, arch, and where you place your weight when you run.
They can even do a "Gait Analysis" on a treadmill in the store, videotaping the person running in different shoes.
"We can slow down the tape and watch what the lower leg, ankle and foot are doing," said Branhan.
The store offers brands like Nike, Mizuno, Asics, Adidas, Brooks, Saucony and New Balance, as well as running/walking clothing and accessories.
Branhan he's "very proud" of the work The Running Spot has done for the Cincinnati running community --a group he's also very proud to be a member of. He said the Queen City's running community is "outstanding" and well known.
"We're known nationally for not only the caliber of runners ... but simply the volume of runners and the volume of fitness enthusiasts in the area," he said.
Bob Roncker's new Running Spot opened August 23 in historic Loveland at 127 W. Loveland Ave. For more info on the new store, Roncker's other locations and the Cincinnati running community, visit www.runningspot.com
