BuyCincy Halloween Guide 08: Still Need a Costume? Cappel’s Has Ideas

October 29, 2008 in Stores

cappels_cincinnati.jpgConfession time: No, I do not have a Halloween costume yet. No, I am not like Sean, who has been planning his Dr. Horrible get-up for months now. And, no, I’m not going to throw on a black dress and kitten ears and call it a night.
Which is why I will be taking advantage of Cappel’s extended hours this week. And if you’re in my predicament, you probably should too.

Three Sheets 2 the Wind Trunk Show

October 26, 2008 in Events, Stores

As we head [too quickly, it seems] into the chill of winter, it’s time to do a bit of much-needed nesting in our humble abodes. And what better excuse to support local, independent design AND catch a bargain than this weekend’s Three Sheets 2 the Wind Trunk Show? That’s right! The studio is celebrating its four-year anniversary of hand-crafted, Scandinavian-influenced design with a special sale and an exclusive sneak peek at the Spring 2009 line. The event will feature owner Jenny Sauer, on hand to answer any questions, and will take place at O’Bryonville’s MiCA and at MiCA 12/v in Over-the-Rhine.

After graduating from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning with a Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design, Jenny Sauer became a women’s wear designer at Abercrombie & Fitch, and then a children’s wear designer at Stride Rite. Four years ago, she decided to take a leap into both academia and independent design. She now runs her own studio and serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Fashion Design at her alma mater.

Enjoy Your Weekend: The National and The Breeders at Fountain Square

October 16, 2008 in Events

enjoyyourweekend.jpg

Get your weekend started!

An unusual event is happening today, head down to Fountain Square tonight for a free concert from two locally-tied bands; The Breeders and The National.

Sisters Kim and Kelley Deal grew up in Dayton and now head The Breeders.
The National, now stationed in New York, started out in Cincinnati in 1999. They’ll
both play a free show in downtown’s Fountain Square Thursday October
16th at 5pm.

The show is part of a Get Out and Vote rally for
Obama/Biden called “Vote Early Rock Late”. So having just told you about the event’s political affiliations, I’ll make it clear, again, that there’s sure to be some “yes, we can” chanting.

AVS ART Gallery

October 12, 2008 in Stores

avs1.jpgAndrew Van Sickle opened AVS ART Gallery in April 2008 with the two-fold goal of exhibiting Pop Art-influenced and outsider work of local and national interest and cultivating the next generation of art collectors. For the past six months, the gallery has achieved this through a combination of clever, fun group exhibits and unique special events such as the recent blogger party. The gallery’s next exhibit, entitled Up in the Air, promises to fulfill both goals.

Opening on Saturday, 18 Oct 2008, Up in the Air will feature the work of fifteen national artists with roots in graffiti and other forms of street art, some of whom were included in the seminal Beautiful Losers exhibit at the Contemporary Arts Center in 2004. Indeed, artist Jason Brunson, who curated Up in the Air with owner Andrew Van Sickle, was involved with Beautiful Losers. Participating artists include: Ewok, Biff Baxter, Dalek, Jesse Geller, Brett Ryan, Jason Brunson, Tony Curanaj, Richard Coleman, Josh Lazcano, Chris Gliebe, Lydia Fong, Carter Gilliss, and Stephen Powers.

Locavore Report: Woodstone Creek Now Available at the Distillery

October 10, 2008 in Uncategorized

Woodstone Creek
Every month, our good friends at Cincinnati Locavore visit BuyCincy to give us the latest on locally-produced foods in the Greater Cincinnati area. Good eatings!

Ohio Governor Ted Strickland has created a new liquor permit, A-3a, which will allow microdistilleries to sell small batch spirits from their own premises.

The very first such permit has been issued to Woodstone Creek. Owners Don and Linda Outterson have been busting their butts for this change, which is a crucial step in allowing small spirits producers to compete with established (and hard-lobbying) liquor distributorships in Ohio’s liquor control system. Since 1933 Ohio’s liquor control laws have required all liquor to be distributed through state outlets which buy from a small handful of entrenched distributors.
The new permit allows a distiller to sell his own products with strict (and as usual for Ohio liquor laws, arcane and protectionist) limitations. A single A-3a permit can be issued in any county with a population of more than 400,000 — essentially limiting the entire state to three permits: one each for Hamilton, Franklin, and Cuyahoga counties. Woodstone Creek may sell two bottles of full-proof spirit to any single customer on any single day at state-regulated prices.
