Shopping for? Friends

Neighborhood: Northside

My second shopping trip in Northside was a little off the main part of the business district.  I went to “NVISION” on Hamilton Ave. next to the Comet.  I’ve been there before, so I knew they had vintage clothes and furniture.  They also have some new stuff that seems to be from local artists and artisans including handmade jewelry, artwork, and home goods such as pillows and place mats.

BuyCincy Holiday Guide 08: Price Hill

Shopping for? Family
Neighborhood: Price Hill
I have done much of my shopping the past few years in my neighborhood Price Hill. To encourage others to do the same, the Price Hill Will Arts Community Action Team sponsored the fourth annual Holiday on the Hill to promote merchants and holiday shopping in Price Hill. The event featured a tree lighting, musical performances, and street caroling along the business district (www.pricehillwill.org).

On the day I was shopping the carolers were not about, but it did not detract from shopping experience. My first stop was the Covedale Center for Performing Arts, in the beautifully restored Covedale Theatre. The arts center is a spectacular venue for live theatre and the winter home for the Cincinnati Young People’s Theatre. Despite the relative youth of the cast, the Young People Theatre produces first rate, professional productions.

BuyCincy Holiday Guide 08: College Hill, Mt. Healthy, Kenwood

Shopping for: My whole family (so if you are related to me you really shouldn’t read this)

Neighborhoods: College Hill, Mt. Healthy, Kenwood, Oakley

I’ve always been a bit of a try to get it all over with in one day kind of guy (though, admittedly, I am way to indecisive to actually be successful in one trip), so I hopped into my blue Saturn and hit the road.

BuyCincy Holiday Guide 08: Downtown Cincinnati – Part 2

Shopping for? My niece (1 year old) and nephew (3 years old)

Neighborhood: Downtown

I didn’t set out with the intention of testing the viability of downtown shopping on a Sunday.  But I spent all afternoon Saturday, when I was supposed to shop, brewing some doppelbock beer with my brother in anticipation of Bockfest.  With a Monday deadline looming I was forced to find out if I could do any local shopping in the City on a Sunday.  My wife and I were pleasantly surprised by what we found.

We first headed to Tower Place Mall.  Normally “mall” and “local shopping” don’t go in the same sentence, but Carew Tower houses several locally-owned stores.  On the way there we took in the holiday sights and sounds: the crowd-pleasing Duke train display, the clip-clop of horse-pulled carriages, the glow of the City’s Christmas tree, and the occasional thud (followed by giggles) of a skater hitting the wall at the ice rink on Fountain Square.

BuyCincy Holiday Guide 08: Over-the-Rhine

Shopping for? The Jenney Family in Minneapolis and Friends and Family
Neighborhood: Over-the-Rhine

As a resident of Over-the-Rhine, I made a commitment this year to buy all my gifts either in OTR or downtown. It took several trips sometimes even back to the same stores but I finally accomplished my task.

I started my shopping trip by meeting up with a friend at Coffee Emporium, my favorite coffee shop in OTR. We got our Java and headed to Vine Street to the new Gateway Quarter to begin our local exploration. We strategically started at Park + Vine and slowly meandered down the street to hit the other specialty shops. Park + Vine carries plenty of affordable eco-friendly gifts from water bottles to baby gear.

Winter Weather = Pot Pie Time!

December 15, 2008 in Local Food, Restaurants

toms1.JPGWhat you see to the left is an unassuming building with a simple sign…what is waiting inside you might wonder?

Delectable warm oooey gooey goodness in the form of pot pie!

When is the last time you had a pot pie? And how about the last time it didn’t come out of a freezer case?

Well Tom’s Pot Pie’s are warm and waiting for you each and every day!

In the 900 block of Vine St. downtown awaits the warm and delicious smell of Tom’s Pot Pies. He’s been in this location for about 18 months and the main portion of his business actually comes from deliveries.

Shopping for? My holiday party and myself
Neighborhood: Hyde Park

This year, my family threw around the idea of not giving gifts.  But my sister Annette demanded that we do.  She loves the holiday gift exchange so much that she even offered to buy things for us to give each other in order to convince us to do it.  So that left me not really having to buy a whole lot this year since she’s buying everything I’m going to give to my family members.  That leaves me plenty of time to shop for myself!

I’m hosting a holiday party for my book club so I decided to stop by Hyde Park Gourmet Food  and Wine (pictured above) to check out their selection of snacks and wines.  As it happened, I was there during their wine tastings (every Saturday, 2-5 pm).  For 50 cents a pour, you get to try some new wines with different cheeses.  Craig, the wine guy that day, was really helpful and explained all about the wines I was tasting.
