New Years Eve 2009: Where to Party

December 30, 2009 in Events

If New Year’s Eve is an indication of your futures in 2010, we hope you won’t want to spend a minute your celebration in a chain. Here are some great local New Year’s Eve bashes to help you get your party on.

Midnight in Munich
Start off the evening at Mecklenburg Gardens to celebrate the clock turning 12 in our sister city of Munich. The event starts at 5pm and will culminate at 6pm (midnight in Munich) with German New Year’s traditions from delicious to strange. A large, hand-made pretzel will be presented by the chef, fortunes will be told, and a cult classic (in Germany) British 1920s short film will be shown. The Meckelenburg German buffet can be had for $20 and an upgrade buffet including champagne toast for $35.

December 17, 2009 in Holiday Guide

VineStPrint.jpg
VisuaLingual, the Cincy-centric design studio comprised of BuyCincy contributor Maya Drozdz and her partner in crime Michael Stout, are back with another awesome OTR-inspired print. Their new Vine St. Print celebrates the city’s dividing thoroughfare in all its architectural glory. The print debuts at MiCA 12/v, located at the 12th and Vine corner located at the left of the work, this Saturday, December 19th.

All proceeds of the print will go to the OTR low- income advocate non-profit Contact Center to help produce, design, and install their new storefront signage on Vine St, also shown on the print. Pick one up for your city-loving friends and family ($100 framed, $85 unframed) and help beautify OTR with your holiday shopping dollars.

BuyCincy Holiday Guide 09: Jukem Football

December 14, 2009 in Holiday Guide

JukemFootball.jpgA little over two years ago, a couple of upstart Cincinnati entrepreneurs contacted BuyCincy and asked us to check out their new football-based card game. After 15 minutes of playing, we were sold, and Quick Count Football made it on our inaugural Holiday Guide.

This year, Jeff and Michelle Spelman are back with a new name and expanded gameplay. Jukem Football builds on Quick Counts strong suits, an easy to play format with a healthy dose of strategy, and makes it easier for fans of all ages to outsmart the competition.

CityBeat Urges You To Take the Shop Local Pledge

December 9, 2009 in News

Loyal BuyCincy readers don’t need much motivation to shop local. You already know that Cincinnati’s shopowners and the neighborhoods they anchor are well worth supporting. But, in an attempt to make your local holiday shopping just a bit sweeter, CityBeat is asking you to take the Shop Local Pledge.  By pledging to spend at least $100 of your holiday spending in locally owned and operated businesses this holiday season, you can be entered into a prize pack of $1000 in local business gift certificates.

As media sponsors of our Cincinnati Unchained event in November, CityBeat helped us kick off a very local holiday season this year. We’re happy to endorse their push to keep that momentum going. Head on over to take their Shop Local Pledge, keep your gifting money in your own neighborhood, and maybe, just maybe, come away with an awesome prize.

VanZandt Tavern: The new face of the old Budna Grill

December 7, 2009 in Restaurants, Subfeature

Budna.jpgAh, the Budna Grill.  For those of us who grew up in North College Hill the mere mention of the Budna stirs a wide variety of memories.  The Budna was the name that sprawled across our chests on our soccer and little league t-shirts.  It was the place where we had our first beers at the ripe old age of under-21.  It had cheap drinks, terrible food, and a great jukebox.  For whatever reason, no matter how dirty it was or bad it smelled we still kept coming back.

So about a year ago when I heard the Budna was for sale I was a little down.  I was afraid that NCH might lose a little bit of it’s history.  (I even thought about putting together a half baked attempt to buy the iconic bar.  Needless to say that didn’t happen.)  However, I couldn’t have been more excited when I heard about who purchased the location and the plans.

Alternative Motive at the MTV Woodie Awards

December 3, 2009 in News

woodieawards.jpgIt’s always nice to hear when a local entrepreneur is recognized nationally. And, it’s even better when it happens to super-cool city boosters like the gang at Alternative Motive. The company was chosen to be a promotional sponsor for MTV’s Woodie Awards, a music awards event for independent artists.

In honor of independent artists, the gift baskets of performers, presenters, and celebrity guests will be graced with tees from Alternative Motive, one of Cincy’s many awesome t-shirt companies.
So, don’t be surprised if you see Death Cab for Cutie, Zooey Deschanel, or Kid Cudi sporting an East Side or West Side shirt.

The Woodies air tomorrow (Friday) at 10pm on MTV, MTV2, MTVU, and online. And, don’t forget to check out Alternative Motive’s new site: www.alternativemotive.com.
