Walking into Ludlow Wines is unique in that one immediately feels at home inside, but never loses the titillation that a window shopper gets when they finally venture inside a shop for the first time. The former is probably due to the immensely friendly staff, while the latter is likely due to the constantly changing (and always eclectic) wine and beer selection. The two exist in this conjunction, though, because Ludlow Wines is unquestionably a pedestrian shop.
Ludlow Wines has been a staple of the Gaslight District for 45 years, and, as co-owner Mike informed us, this makes Ludlow Wines the oldest continuous operation wine shop in Cincinnati. When asked about Clifton, Mike confessed, "I love this area. It's very diverse and very educated."
Ludlow Wines has a selection of wines and beer from around the world. "We try to keep the kind of variety that provides for anyone from Italians looking for their favorite Prosecco [an Italian sparkling wine], to Spanish individuals looking for Cava [a Spanish sparkling wine]." When asked about the various wines the shop carries, Mike began naming country after country, before finally stopping to summarize, "We primarily focus on wines and beers you can't find anywhere else in the city."
Mike and his wife Julie are the fourth owners of Ludlow Wines. They've worked together to expand the selection in thoughtful ways, with Mike focusing on wine diversity while Julie works to turn the shop into a beer destination. "We were the first to introduce the beer selection here. It has a definite focus on craft beer, and we allow shoppers to 'make their own six-pack,' which allows them to try almost any beer in the shop cheaply."
Finally, Ludlow Wines offers tastings twice a week, with beer and wine tasting available on Saturday nights 5-8 pm, and wine tastings available on Friday nights 5-8 pm. These tastings are often themed, and patrons are invited to even call ahead to check what will be available. Prices for this can vary, but typically are five dollars or lower.
"A lot of people make a night of coming here for a tasting. They come to the tasting, maybe catch dinner, and head to the Esquire for a movie.
