Cluxton Alley is tucked
away in the southern half of the Northside Business District. I
stopped in recently after leaving a Saturday morning class at Yoga
Ah, across the street. I found that I wasn't the only one with
this idea - two of my yoga classmates were there also, drinking
coffee and eating baked goods from Shadeau bakery. I've only
been in the shop a few times - it is a business you can miss.
It is located behind Bohemian Graffiti near the intersection of
Hamilton and Blue Rock.
I had noticed that sign and, occasionally, another announcing, "BREAD TODAY," but I had never really been sure what (or where) exactly the business was.
When you walk passed the sign and through a brick alleyway, you get to the small coffee roaster and shop. Jan Young, the proprietor, has owned the building since 1992. About three years ago she started the coffee roasting and then added the retail business several years ago. Now you can get coffee by the cup, roasted whole beans and Shadeau bread and pastries. Jan displays work by several local artists, including David McKenrick, who makes shaker-style wooden boxes.

I always wonder when businesses set up a situation where someone could walk past their street entrance and not be able to figure out from their signage what their primary business is. I've seen that a lot in the food service industry, and I never really understand it. I guess they must be doing okay with the business they've got from curious people who finally decide to come check it out one day.
Never heard of or seen this place until now. I'll have to check it out in the near future...thanks for the heads up.
Jan roasts some of the best coffee I've ever had, Cluxton Alley is definitely a hidden gem worth frequenting in Northside!
Our favorite is the Kenya AA roast, although it does sell out quickly.
Excellent roasts! Great host and atmosphere. Cheapest first-rate cup of coffee anywhere and the breads and sweets are yummy! Stop by!
