Scotti’s: Old School Italian in Cincinnati

April 28, 2009 in Restaurants

There are certain places in the city that you walk past day after day and just know that something great hides inside. For me, Scotti’s small restaurant storefront on Vine Street is one of those places. There’s something about the quaint, two-story downtown building and snazzy retro neon sign that speaks to me. So, when a couple friends invited me to Scotti’s for dinner recently, I jumped at the chance.

Virgil’s Cafe – Bellevue, KY’s finest!

April 26, 2009 in Restaurants

virgils1.JPG Virgil’s in Bellevue opened a couple of months ago and has been doing really well! They even had a 2 hour wait a couple nights ago!

The chef is very excited about his from-scratch dishes and his attention to detail.

There were four of us that decided to stop in for a later bite on Friday night!

The prices are great – starting at $4!

Take the Cake in Northside

April 25, 2009 in Uncategorized

On a Thursday afternoon I visited the new Take the Cake café
on Hamilton Avenue.
Last time I wrote about Cluxton Alley Coffee Roasters, and Take the Cake is a
close neighbor.  They recently expended
from a bakery into a dine-in café with hot food.  I had been to the bakery on Main St., but had not yet tried them out
in Northside.  I went to their website to
check the hours (Sunday/Monday: Closed, Tuesday-Friday: 8am-6pm, Saturday:
8am-4pm) and it looks, I must say, very cool:

Sunday hours to begin earlier so the Market will open at 10:00am on

New hours of operation begin on May 10,
2009.

The other day we went for a walk at lunch and stumbled across Diner on Elm at 8th & Elm.

It’s a nice little spot across from a church and has a mix of American and Middle Eastern food.

It used to be Apple on Elm as well as Marrakech – I hope this one sticks around for a while!

There are salads, sandwiches and entrees – a nice selection.

Let’s check out our selections!

The Wine Merchants of Venice

April 16, 2009 in Stores

There’s nothing I look more forward to than a spring evening on my deck with friends sharing an excellent bottle of wine. To find this excellent bottle of wine, the first and typically only place I go is The Wine Merchant. The staff is friendly and very helpful, especially when you are trying to pair a particular dish to a wine.  The last time I visited I needed both a bottle of white and red wine for a pizza extravaganza at my friend’s house. The recommendations for an Italian Chianti and Pinot Grigio were perfect.  My favorite wine for spring, which I discovered in Portugal last year, is vinho verde.  Vinho Verde wines are considered “green wines” because they come from very young grapes and the wine has a bit of effervescence to it like a sparking wine but not quite. To my surprise, The Wine Merchant carried 2-3 varieties of vinho verde, my favorite being Gazela, which at only $6.99 is a bargain.

I headed out Friday night to see Soul Pocket and decided to have dinner first. The food was just okay overall – but the band was great! It’s a great venue for music…but let’s get to the food…
