The 3/50 Project: Improving Local Economies 3 Stores at a Time

July 30, 2009 in News, Subfeature

The idea is simple. Which 3 locally-owned stores would you miss the most if they went out of business? Spend a total of $50 per month in those 3 stores to contribute to their well-being. Contribute to your neighborhood’s vibrancy and help stimulate its economy.

That’s the idea behind The 3/50 Project, a grassroots campaign that attempts to get people to consider where they spend their money, and what effect it has on their community. As you might, expect, we are all for it.

According to The 3/50 Project:

“If just half the employed U.S. population spent $50 each month in independently owned businesses, their purchases
would generate more than $42.6 billion in revenue.”

Gilpin’s Expands Hours, Delivers on Segways

July 27, 2009 in Restaurants

gilpins_bagel_deli.jpg

Gilpin’s Bagel & Deli has been serving up steamed bagels on 7th St. to the weekday lunch (8am – 2:30pm Mon.-Fri.) and weekend late night crowd (8pm – 3:30am Fri. and Sat.) since their March opening, but they are now gearing up to feed the masses with expanded hours and a delivery service. The shop has added Sunday brunch (10am – 1:30pm) and Wednesday and Thursday late night (8pm – 3:30am) hours.

Though we are certainly excited about that, we’re even more excited about getting a Gilpin’s sandwich delivered for lunch by Segway or late night via scooter.

Help Findlay Market Win $5,000

July 27, 2009 in News

We saw this over on UrbanCincy and had to help spread the word. Care2 and Local Harvest have put together the “Love Your Farmers’ Market” contest and are giving away $5,000 to the market that gets the most vote. Many of the city’s best markets are involved, including the Farm Market of College Hill, Northside Farmers’ Market, and Hyde Park Farmers’ Market.

However, Findlay Market, as you might expect, has the best change of bringing home the locally-produced bacon. As I type, Findlay is 11th. Click on the banner below to visit the site and help push Findlay Market to the top.

BuyCincy Round-up: Charley Harper Calendars, Nati Evolvement Interview, Cuba Cafe Opens

July 19, 2009 in In Other Publications

Some of our favorite BuyCincy-approved tidbits from the web recently:

  • Fabulous Frames has started selling 4 different styles of 2010 Charley Harper calendars in store and online. We didn’t get one in time last year and they sold out – you can bet we will be snagging one in time this year.
  • Soapbox profiles Cuba Cafe, a Cuban restaurant opening on Madison Ave. in Covington. The small eatery is serving up sandwiches, bean and rice dishes, and Cuban coffee.
  • NKY.com brings us the sad news that the Green Derby in Newport has closed. The family-owned restaurant on York St. had been in operation for 62 years.
  • The Style Sample has a really great interview with our friends at Nati Evolvement where they discuss the creative process behind their t-shirt designs.
