Cincinnati Unchained 2009: Break the Chain This Saturday

November 17, 2009 in Events

cincinnati_unchained_logo.jpg

It’s that time of year again. We join local businesses throughout the city urging you to break the corporate chain and shop locally-only for one day. The third annual Cincinnati Unchained is this Saturday, November 21st, with over 30 locally-owned businesses offering specials to help you get a jump start on holiday shopping.

In economic times such as these, it is more important than ever to support your neighbors and strengthen our local economy. Studies from Maine to Austin have shown that every dollar spent in a local store generates about 3 times more economic activity then that spent in a chain. By choosing to shop locally-owned for just one day, we can do our part to create healthy neighborhoods and help improve Cincinnati’s economy.

Cincinnati Unchained is brought to you by BuyCincy with media sponsor CityBeat. To view a full list of participating stores along with special offers, go to buycincy.com/unchained.

Essencha’s Essential Teas: Favorite Fall Teas

November 8, 2009 in Columns, Feature

Guest column by Tracy Monson of Essencha Tea House & Fall Teas
Fall is my favorite time of year. Senses become stimulated and saturated with deeper, richer colors and flavors, and new sounds and fresher-feeling air begins to envelop us. Baking and braising feels new again: home and heart-warming breads, braised stews and meats, and colorful, spicy soups return to my repertoire. This homecoming prompts a return to many favorite tea pairings. Here are my top 5 for Fall:

What ever happened to the Milk Man?: United Dairy Farmers

November 4, 2009 in Uncategorized

At one time the Milk Man was a part of every day life in America, bringing fresh from the farm dairy products directly to our doors, and as the old joke goes perhaps a little more… (it wasn’t just the stork that brought new babies to the family if you know what I mean).

But what ever happened to the Milk Man?

When I set out to write this article I did some research to find the answer to that question.  What I found was far more interesting.

Mayberry Opens Downtown

November 4, 2009 in News, Restaurants

While Vine St. in downtown Cincinnati is hardly a scene out of The Andy Griffith Show, a fresh take on Americana cuisine is trying to bring a little Opie to your lunch. Mayberry, the new sitdown restaurant from the gourmands behind Findlay Market’s World Food Bar, opened for business this week at 915 Vine.

Owners Joshua Campbell and Corey Wietmarschen are serving classy but casual breakfast and lunch dishes that surprise with “simplicity and price.” Sandwiches, salads, and lunch entrees are $7-$8, not too shabby.

You can catch a bite at Mayberry Mon.-Fri. from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Maybe with enough pestering (something the BuyCincy staff excels at) we can get them to open for weekend brunch.

Here’s the opening menu:
