  BuyCincy Holiday Guide 08: Over-the-Rhine

Our Holiday Guide moves to eclectic shopping in Over-the-Rhine.

Grammers.jpgWe spoke this week with Ryan Breen, manager of Grammer's, and he had some exciting news.
Due to popular demand, and the support that came out for Christian Moerlein's Christkindl tapping, we at Grammer's have decided to reopen this weekend, and others following it, for our friends in the bar crowd.

After checking them out this Saturday for Cincinnati Unchained, it might be time to hit Melt again on Sunday to help them celebrate their 3rd anniversary. From 4pm to 8pm, every customer with a purchase over $7 will get surprise "Melt Money" applied to their purchase.

Get rewarded with $1 to $6 of Melt Money just for eating a delicious sandwich. Mmmmmmm.....sandwich.
After taking a virtual stroll through College Hill and Northside businesses participating in Cincinnati Unchained, we continue south to Downtown, Over-the-Rhine, and Bellevue, KY.

Before we explore the stores in the city center participating in Unchained, go ahead and take a look at our great list of sponsoring stores, which helped to make this year's event possible. Then, head over and check out all 44 participating stores, sorted by neighborhood, each with their own special specifically for Cincinnati Unchained.

Recently, Antonio Adams, his Mother, 3 brothers and sister lost their house and everything they own in a fire on 10-24-08. Antonio Adams is one of the founding artists of Visionaries and Voices. It was his vision of an "art thing" where artists with disabilities could bring their creativity to the forefront of their lives. With the help of co-founders Keith Banner & Bill Ross, Antonio's vision was realized as Visionaries & Voices. V&V, in collaboration with D'mar Entertainment, are planning a huge benefit to help Antonio and his family get resettled into a home.

This Saturday, the biggest local shopping event of the year goes down.

Cincinnati Unchained, our award-winning annual event celebrates its second year of connecting neighborhoods back with their locally-owned businesses. We encourage everyone in the city to stop by their neighborhood shops, restaurants, butcher, bar, dry cleaner and bakery instead of that boring (and no doubt stressful) big box retailer.

This year, 44 stores are joining our effort, enticing you to start your holiday shopping early with deals, gifts, and donations to charity. Here's what to expect from the neighborhoods of College Hill and Northside.

Shoetopia turns 3

Happy Birthday! One of the city's favorite and few independent shoe stores, Shoetopia, will celebrate its third anniversary this weekend. They'll be sales and snacks both Saturday and Sunday in the Northside store.

I have several favorite third places in Cincinnati - places where I can take my books/laptop/self to, plop down on a chair and spend some hours relaxing and people watching. Some are better than others, but Awakenings never fails me. The Hyde Park coffee house/wine bar has great coffee and a calm, cool atmosphere.

Tri-Casa Card Game

tri-casa-card-game.jpgIn the face of a bazillion foreclosures throughout the country, and a economy that doesn't look so hot, it takes strong conviction in your idea to release a card game geared around real estate. However, that is exactly what local resident Emily Garrett has done with Tri-Casa, a card game aimed at families that get down with Rummy or Uno.

Gameplay is very straightforward. Each player starts off with 7 cards and each regular card has a house with an address. When you collect 3 houses on the same street or 3 houses of the same color, you can lay those cards down for points. However, special cards can give you an advantage or ruin your competitor's day.

Shake-It is giving music lovers a reason to hang on to their oh-so-fashionable "I Voted" stickers. Throughout tomorrow's voting day (Tuesday 11/4, mark it down) and what the past few elections has become recount day (Wednesday 11/5), Shake-It is offering 10% off your purchase when your sport your voting sticker. In their words, "We figure this is the most important election a looooong time so let's give folks a High Five when they vote & they can save a few bucks in these tight times."

If two days of Shake-It goodness aren't good enough (and they rarely are), the store of course has more events throughout the month.
