When I passed Michael Brown sampling his Just Cured salmon across from Luken's Fish, Poultry & Seafood at Findlay Market last month, I backed up to grab a sample. After I tasted it I wanted to grab a second, but that seemed greedy. So instead I introduced myself.

Michael, who lives in Western Hills even though neither he nor his wife grew up on the West Side, is curing some of the best salmon I've ever tasted onsite at Findlay Market in a sparkling clean custom-built smoke room across the street from the Lukens stand. It's a dream of his and his wife's, both lifelong foodies, to build a long-time hobby into a second career. When he recently left a big local law firm, they decided the time was right to see if his recipe for handcrafted salmon had legs.

I caught up with him one day while he dry-cured 25 pounds of his wonderful European-style cold-smoked salmon.

With Cincinnati's strong German heritage, it isn't surprising that you'd be able to find some great artisanal sausage here. I met Jose Almeida of the Linwood Sausage Company last year at the Hyde Park Farmers' Market (Sundays starting June 1st, 10am - 2pm at the US Bank parking lot, 3424 Edwards Rd) where he and his wife Susan sell their handmade sausages. Each week they bring four different sausages to market and offer samples of each type they're selling that week. This year, thanks to the efforts of MaryIda Compton and Judy Williams in obtaining a mobile teardown license to meet Hamilton Co Board of Health requirements for selling ready-to-eat food, they'll also be selling sausages sandwiches grilled onsite in addition to their frozen packages.

Greetings from Findlay Market

Two weeks ago Cincinnati hosted the Society of Architectural Historians conference. Architreks conducted tours through our wonderful Over-the-Rhine to show off the collection of amazing buildings and districts of Italianate architecture. Naturally, many attendees made their way to Findlay Market. Why? Because of the significance of the Market's historical relevance to the city of Cincinnati's economic and cultural development.

This weekend is, fittingly, shaping up to be about one thing and one thing only - beer.  Whether the blizzard forced you to miss out on last weekend's beer festivities or you are just looking forward to staining your tongue green on Monday, beer will be flowing.  Here are this weekend's best activities...

A few weeks back we asked Bill Donabedian, Managing Director of Fountain Square, and Co-founder of the Midpoint Music Festival, to tell us about one of his favorite local spots and here is what he said:

We're very happy to have Cincinnati independent record store extraordinaire, Shake-It Records, drop some music knowledge around the BuyCincy grounds.  Check back for regular columns from Billy Carter of Shake-It.

RECORDS I LIKED A LOT IN 2007.
(And 1 Sentence about each of them)

Stars of the Lid - And The Refinement Of the Decline
-this is the sound your subconscience will hear as you exhale the very last breath of your life.

Grinderman - S/T
-Nick Cave and 3 other lumberjacks/homeless men murder their instruments via love gone wrong.

Pissed Jeans - Men Of Hope
-an audio stomachache of beautiful dis-tastefulness.

NO AGE - Weirdo Rippers
-two dorks sat in their apartment and made a really crappy sounding jigsaw puzzle of sounds: Genius.

The National - Boxer
-regular fellas make exceptionally good music minus dip-shit fashion trends (Got that Interpol?)

High On Fire - Death is Communion
-if a giant heard of storming elephants played electric guitars....and worshiped Motorhead.

Bughouse Check-up - 1/1/08

BuyCincy is proud to team up with Bughouse Video, "Cincinnati's only independently-owned arthouse video rental store" for a BuyCincy exclusive column. The crew from Bughouse will be stopping by on a regular basis to give us their picks for new releases, hidden gems, or anything they think you might dig.

This week, we asked Bughouse to give us their favorite releases of 2007.

Bughouse Favorite Releases for 2007

We at Bughouse feel so fortunate to select our favorite DVD releases from 2007 - the film critics only get the last 12 months to choose from - but we get to choose a film if it's been released on dvd during 2007...could be Spiderman III or it could be a classic 1950's Kurosawa that is finally making its DVD debut. With that said, here they are in no particular order:

1) Lives of Others - The acting, the story, the emotion...yep, it's a true cinematic winner

2) Children of Men - A story that is just a little too real makes this sci-fi thriller work for us

3) Paul Lynde Halloween Special - You can guarantee that we'll be the only ones with this on the top of our list! It's that ridiculous

4) Volver - Good, but also because it's the latest Almodovar...not his best, but still quirky with loads of camp

5) Flushed Away - Anything that comes from the Aardman studios is bloody brilliant: Rats in the sewer fighting against a diabolical toad and his French/ninja/cousin frog is no exception (plus our 4 year old loves it too)

MUSIC FOR BOTH SIDES OF YOUR BRAIN:

Charlie Louvin - "LIVE AT SHAKE IT RECORDS" / Tompkins Square
In 1941 The Louvin Brothers made thier performing debut in Flatrock, AL.  There was a talent show (they won) & a July 4th get together prior to this "professional" debut, but who's counting? They would stop and start again for a while, ya know with WWII and allgetting in the mix. But for the next two decades the boys, Charlie and Ira, would carve out a place not only in counrty music, but American music history. To list thier string of accomplishemtns and accolades would be best left to your own discovery. There is plenty there to be educated on for sure.

In 1965 Ira left us far too soon in a fatal car wreck. Charlie kept going - that's what Ira would have wanted.
So, 60 plus years after he began, Charlie Louvin walked through the doors of Shake It Records in Cincinnati, OH - his band was right behind him, he was there to play. For over an hour a packed house was treated to six
decades of a life story told in song. Nobody came out and said it, but you could feel it hanging in the air, "I was here, I got to see this this". This is the document of that May 11th evening. You can hear it for yourself in all its raw glory. And if you listen really closely you might get a itch of what was in the air that night, genuineness.  And as Charlie would and did say, May the good Lord bless and keep you.

Perfume - The Story of a Murderer
Review by Jessica

Jean-Baptiste Grunuis (Ben Whishaw) is born under his mother's fish market table in an 18th century France open air market. After being almost intentionally smothered by his new mother he is rescued and sent to an orphanage where he realizes his gift...his magnificent olfactory sense. After the orphanage and a stint as a tanner he begs to apprentice with a perfumer (Dustin Hoffman) who reluctantly takes him on, but then learns that his young worker has the most remarkable talent for creating tantalizing and seductive scents.

Crazy Love (new release 10/16/07)

Review by Jessica @ bughouse video

I feel wrong, numb, and hauntingly confused. Why did I sit through 92 minutes of wrong-ness, what compelled me, and why did I really ENJOY this documentary? Answer: This story is just too crazy to NOT be true that it was hard to peel my eyes away (obvious pun not intended). Late 1950’s: Cute young Brooklynite Linda Riss catches the eye of an older thirty-something Burt Pugach while he was driving down the street one day; he can’t get her out of his head and pursues her with the tenacity of…well, a crazy person. Burt wines and dines Linda for several years, wooing her with his lawyerly wealth and celebrity connections (me thinks Linda wanted his money as she is getting ready to marry this guy)…until Linda finally figures out why there will be no wedding bells – Burt is already married – oh the horror!

You would think that a not-so-great script, sub-par acting, and a budget of $25k would render this film virtually forgotten in the scrap heap of “first films”…but there’s so much more to experience and appreciate in Mala Noche, Gus van Sant’s first feature film. Tim Streeter stars as Walt, a clerk at the local liquor/convenience store in the seedy Old Town section of Portland, Oregon who falls hard for an illegal Mexican immigrant teenager (Johnny).

4 BRAND NEW RELEASES THAT MERIT EXTRA ATTENTION

QUI - "LOVE'S MIRACLE" / Ipecac

How does one approach this album and NOT invoke the name of the Jesus Lizard? Well, I just did, so to hell with that challenge. Anyway, the record delivers.

Song # 8 "Belt" cops so much Lizard, with the spiky guitar plinks and plucks, that it cut's just a wee bit close to the decomposing bone. Forgiveness, I say.

They do 2 covers of a 9 song record. One is a Pink Floyd's "Echoes" -but way shortened. The other the boggie-burner Zappa/Beefheart number "Willie The Pimp" They are both good. The drummer, while no Mac (& who could be?) is very dynamic and puts down a pretty mean thump.
