Baba Budan's: Food, Drinks, and Entertainment in Clifton Heights

babas2.jpgIt has been the long touted goal of certain corporate coffee chains to make people feel connected to their coffee shop. Of course, this is rather difficult if the shop doesn't reciprocate. The alternative? Slip into a chair at Baba Budan's in Clifton Heights for some coffee, food, or cold one. You'll find local artists on the walls and stage (or perhaps at the end of the bar) and a friendly barista behind the counter.
Baba Budan's has been a campus area fixture for +10 years. Originally across from the campus on Calhoun Street, Baba Budan's is now situated where Clifton ends into McMillan, nearby Hughes High School. It has come to serve quite a diverse demographic, with a healthy mixture of students, locals, and area workers. Rome Ntukogu, manager, said, "It's a crazy demographic. It's very eclectic, with anyone from Freshmen to older neighborhood crowds."

Perhaps Baba's ability attract customers of all kinds is due to its diverse menu and activities. The coffee menu features coffee and espresso drinks (most of which are fair trade), around ten different hot teas, Yerba Mate (a type of light tea, reminiscent of a creamier green tea), and blended ice drinks. The food available is quite agreeable, including wraps, salads, vegan-friendly soups, fruit, and locally made pastries. If you stop in for lunch you'll notice a variety of paintings and photographs by local artists on the walls.

Babas.jpgIf you happen to make a night visit (though you'll miss the happy hour) Baba's has around 70 different bottled beers, wines, and a variety of mixed drinks. Every night but Sunday features live music, including reggae, jazz, hip-hop, open mics, and karaoke.

If you've ever spent time in a campus coffeehouse, you're likely familiar with its perks; but the community atmosphere at Baba's engages you and accommodates whatever stimulation you may need, whether it be chemical or mental. Not surprisingly, Baba's has been sporting a new motto lately: "Eat local, drink local, experience local."

*In the spirit of community, Baba's would like to ask any local artists or musicians to contact Rome or Mikey Walters at the shop. They offer a venue for your art (at no commission) and music on their new stage.
