When many of us think of Jean-Robert and his prolific restaurant group, we long for the eclectic food from a distance: "Maybe for my Birthday", etc. What we often forget is how wonderfully accessible these restaurants really are. We've recently featured Lavomatic Café, and we at BuyCincy further invite you to stop by its Kentucky cousin, the Greenup Café, whose "Grill-Out on the Patio" nights have now arrived with the summer weather. The Greenup Café is located in Covington on Greenup Street. The café maintains a very informal and warm atmosphere within an old Italianate house. There are three rooms within, tables on the sidewalk, a patio behind the building, and a coffee-bar area filled with take-out and pastries. "A lot of people stop by just to take their food to the river for a picnic," Barista Richard Dallinger said from behind an array of tempting pastries. The pastries, like the entire menu at Greenup Café, are made fresh and from scratch.
The menu is very broad, and constantly changing. What you can always expect is flexibility; whether you wish to spend a few dollars on coffee and fruit, or 30 dollars on a large dinner of lamb and wine, Greenup will fit the ticket at a reasonable price. Since its start in June of 2006, it has made freshness a motto, and if anything can be gleaned from the Jean-Robert/Wade Group's multiple openings since then, freshness works. The past months, in particular, have been exciting ones for the café. The kitchen staff has been experimenting and fine-tuning. As one staff-person said, "Our menu is changing every day now." The beginning of summer has brought "Grill-out on the Patio" to the café on Wednesdays and Sundays from 5:30-9:30. Patrons are invited to enjoy the weather with special deals from the grill (vegetable kabobs are available) and the cooler, where "grab your own" saves you cash on beer and wine. Patrons who have long lamented the totally arbitrary and unfounded (prove our staff otherwise) practice of separating lunch from breakfast will also find solace in the café's new combinations of the two.
