Aglamesis Bros. and Putz's Creamy Whip: Cincinnati Ice Cream Institutions
BuyCincy would like to welcome the newest member of our team, Libby Andress. Libby was born and raised in Cincinnati, but now lives in New York. However, she still loves the city and its unique small businesses. Welcome Libby!

In the thick of summer I avoid the long lines at the more obvious and notorious ice cream establishments, in favor of some unique and treasured favorites. Aglamesis Brothers ice cream in Oakley and Montgomery, call it by just plain Aglamesis, has been enticing people well beyond my short life. The establishment just reached it's hundredth year, and has much of its original decor restored or preserved. I CRAVE the supremely dense chocolate shakes with homemade whipped cream and butter cookies, which I have been known to request in my father's infamous Aglamesis pick-ups.
As the heat only seems to make the days drag out longer, I look fondly on still another summertime cool-down favorite. A second family ice-cream tradition was making the trip over to Putz's creamy whip in Westwood. It has changed locations more than once, but the business has been around long enough for my grandparents to have gone for a date. (hint: 1938) The shell of the dipped ice cream is the thickest I have ever encountered. I go for butterscotch. It's right off I-74, and not as hard to get to as people would think, so I don't want to hear any excuses. In the summer evenings, after the day has lost its heat the trip is well worth an excuse for frivolous use of gas as you will be able to keep the AC off and the windows down.

Aglamesis whipped cream is unlike that found anywhere else. how do they do it?
Putz's is the best creamy whip in the city. Hands down.
And I would love to start a campaign to get an Aglamesis in College Hill. I think it would be a perfect fit.
Any idea why there are no Dairy Queens in the Cincinnati city limits ?
Is it some kind of Lindner/Buffet deal ?
Putz's is fine for most things, but they don't have those slimy little french fried mushrooms DQ has.
mmmmmmmmm
Graeter's seems to get all the local love, but Aglamesis is the best ice cream in the city, with the possible exception of gelato [which, of course, isn't exactly ice cream] from Madison's.
a childhood in finneytown led to many trips to both establishments. often putz's on warm summer nights, and aglamesis in the autumn & spring. truly an east meets west juxtapose - with graeter's as the arbiter. all jewels in our landscape.
I remember going to Aglamesis on the square when my aunt and grandma lived there...the chocolate mousse, ahh my mouth is watering.
Putz's was another favorite memory, many nights sitting in the parking lot with a chocolate dipped cone. I'm hungry!
Aglamesis is, by far, the superior ice cream in Cincinnati. Graeter's is good, but no match for the sphincter-tightening goodness that is their blueberry, raspberry, or banana chocolate chip ice cream.
