Don't dwell on it for too long, though, because you've still got to decide what kind of spices you want; your desired sauces or dressings; what kind of noodles, etc, etc. As you munch later on, you might try to count what other Cincinnati Vietnamese restaurants you had ordered this dish from; we promise you won't need to relinquish your chopsticks hand to add it up.
Darren Phan has been running Cilantro Vietnamese Bistro since he opened it in Clifton Heights four years ago. A native of the area, and former UC student, Darren told us "This area is a nice fit for it, you need the kind of diversity that Clifton Heights has." He went on to add, "It can be hard to be an ethnic restaurant that serves something different from what people are used to. People know Pad-Thai, but not Vermicelli."

You can order in or take your food with you at Cilantro. The menu is diverse and highly customizable, but far from daunting. In a similar vein, the prices are great for college budgets (anywhere from ~$2-$6). The final reason you should check this place out? It's healthy, and vegan friendly.

Try this Clifton Heights secret out for yourself. Just bring an appetite and a desire to defy death and taxes.

Perfect For?
Takeout or warm soup lunches and dinners on a small budget.

Where to get it?
Cilantro is across the street from Hughes High School, 2510 Clifton Ave/ Cincinnati OH, 45219. But nestled in Clifton Heights, Maki Express is giving its patrons a simple and pleasurable experience that's sure leave some extra cash in your pocket (for another visit maybe?).
Ranging from $2.50 to $11.95, Maki features only three tables and
counter. "I chose the University area for that type of customer," Chef
and co-owner Likit Thumrongthaisakul chimed from behind the counter.
Likit and his wife Unchasa operate the Express on their own, with her working the
kitchen while he prepares the sushi. While we spoke, students and
professors shuffled through; their orders were quickly prepared by the
couple, and they left with sushi abundance in their arms.

This is the Thumrongthaisakul's first restaurant, but they've already
developed a crew of regulars. "We have people that call, order one item
off the menu, and say, 'Just make me something good,' and I make them
one of my specialties or try something new." Likit paused before
adding, "They really like it that way." For those of you looking for a
similar adventure, the menu features 21 "Chef Special Rolls," almost
all of which are Likit's own creation. The rest of the menu features an
assortment of very fresh dishes that we're sure you'll enjoy.

Don't let the "Express" in the title confuse you, Maki strives to
combine its speed and affordability with a warm and welcoming
atmosphere. We at BuyCincy are glad to see this "ma and pop" store go
into its third year of service. Stop by for a quick lunch or dinner and
we're sure you'll agree.

Perfect For?
Anyone in the campus area looking for sushi and Asian specialties. For
non-sushi eaters, Maki features a Teriyaki, Noodle, and Cooked Roll
section. The menu also includes a party tray and larger combinations if
you have several mouths to feed.
He was drawn to O'Bryonville and its unique, established businesses. (We are, too. It's just so... quaint, cute and, well, local!) Not familiar with THE waffles? They're Jean-François Flechet's Belgian waffles, which - to be fair and honest - can be found in other local coffee shops, too. (More on Jean-François and his sinfully delicious waffles soon, we promise!)

If atmosphere is most important to you, you're in luck. The Coffee Shop has an entire collection of bright and whimsical Charley Harpers on display, plus a "secret garden" out back, with four tables. Grammer's has already established itself as a sure stop for any local beer afficionado, and has provided us with its newly finished beer list for spring and summer. For those of you less inclined to drink beer, Grammer's has also announced that it is now carrying Cincinnati's own Woodstone Creek Vodka. We featured Woodstone Creek only weeks ago here. Peruse the menu and stop by this new/old OTR favorite!
Christian Moerlein OTR Ale
This unique hybrid pale ale is an old pre-refrigeration Moerlein recipe which accounts for the extra hops, which were used as a preservative in that time period. Slightly hoppy with a fair amount of sweet malts provide an exciting taste making it our most popular draft. OTR stands for Over-the-Rhine, but hopefully that is not news as it is also your present location. 6.0% ABV
4.00

Christian Moerlein Barbarossa
Brewed from Moerlein's original recipe, Barbarossa is the first pre-prohibition lager that they ever made. This double-dark lager has slightly grainy malts and a light, crisp body with hops that bring a faint but pleasant bitterness. Barbarossa is yet another tasty brew from Moerlein. Well done sir. 5.0% ABV
4.00

Samuel Adams Lager
Brewed right down Liberty St. (yes, Sam Adams is local, in case you were not aware) this Vienna style lager is crisp with a sweetness from the caramel. It has a smooth noble hop background making for easy drinking. This Vienna Lager finishes dry and really is a pleasure. 4.75% ABV
3.50

Paulaner Hefe-weizen
Lots of malt greet the nose, with hints of lemon to come and some grassy hops. The taste confirms the lemon, which is pleasant and not overbearing, while biscuit flavored malt predominates. Refreshing and pleasant, and served with an orange, so you get some vitamin c as well. It's win-win really. 5.5% ABV
3.50

Ayinger Celebrator
Ayinger's crown jewel, Celebrator has aromas of roasted malt, plum and fig. It has a crisp and clean roasted malt taste with no bitterness. This is a very smooth, drinkable bock. BeerAdvocate. com gives it an A+ if that means anything to you. 6.7% ABV
8.50

Bell's Rotating Tap (Please ask which is currently being served)

Oberon
The perfect balance of sun and wheat, Oberon is a beautiful orange hue with a slightly sweet aroma and a flavor that is unmistakably summer. Enjoy! 5.8% ABV
4.00

Two-Hearted
This IPA pours a bright amber color with a mouth-watering half inch head, grapefruit notes jump out from the glass. the taste is untouchable according to this amateur beer taster - crisp hops balanced by a near perfect malt framework. 7.0% ABV
3.50

Barrelhouse Duveneck Dortmunder Lager
This golden lager is brewed using traditional German decoction mash. A medium-bodied golden lager showcasing a delicious malt flavor balanced with a noble hop character. 4.2% ABV
3.50

Bottle Beer
Flying Dog Tire Bite Golden Ale
That's just silly, dogs can't fly A delightfully light and crisp ale with a flavorful hop edge that is seemingly made for balmy Cincinnati summers. 5.12% ABV
3.50

Allagash White
With orange peel and coriander aromas, it has a refreshing and smooth taste with just the right amount of carbonation. We like it because it smells pretty. 5.0% ABV
4.50

Konig Pilsner
Floral, hop and lemon aromas with a refreshing and very dry malt flavor make this medium bodied Pilsner one beer to enjoy. Friends don't let friends drink bud light, give them Konig Pilsner instead. 4.9% ABV
2.75

Stoudt's Brewing Company Pils
Clear, crisp, and clean with an assertive hop presence to balance out a delicate grainy malt profile. It is brewed in the tradition of northern German pilsners. 5.4% ABV
4.00

Stoudt's Double IPA
Amazingly smooth for such a bruiser of a beer, although Stoudt's proudly claims this as their highest alcohol beer, but at 10.0% ABV chances are that a few of these won't lead you to your proudest moments. Or hey, perhaps it will, who are we to judge naked yodeling.
4.00

Wittekerke
Translated "The White Church" is brewed with 25% wheat malt, coriander seeds, and orange peel to provide a soft lemony profile that is the perfect thirst quencher at any time of day, even 9am. 5.0% ABV
4.00

Wolaver's Brewery Organic Pale Ale
That's right, no pesticides in this beer! This certified organic ale produced since 1997 and brewed in Middlebury, VT. Pours a rich copper color and provides an amazing balance of an up front malt flavor supported by soft, fruity hop assertiveness. Finally someone gives organic beers FLAVOR. 5.8%ABV
4.50

Victory Prima Pils
This pilsner has won a ridiculous amount of awards, and for good reasons. Heaps of hops give this pale lager a bracing, herbal bite over layers of soft and smooth malt flavor. This makes Prima a classy quencher in the tradition of great European pilsners. Dry and delightful, this is an elegant beer. 5.3% ABV. You look classier already.
3.50

Victory Golden Monkey
Strong and sensual, this golden, Belgian-style ale glows with goodness. The richness of German malts and Belgian yeast are tempered by a sparkling approach and overall light body. Considerable depth of character with abundant herbal, fruity notes make this one to savor, although at 9.5% alcohol you may have trouble remembering.
4.25

Red Stripe
Yes, it is that well known Jamaican beer with the distinct flavor. Grab one and you're instantly transported to the Caribbean. Ok, so maybe not, but just pretend, mon. 4.7% ABV
2.75

More of their menu can be found at www.grammers.net, including a wine and spirits list.

Where to get it?
Grammer's is located at 1440 Walnut Street/ Cincinnati, OH 45202. Phone number: 513-421-8300. Web Address: www.Grammers.net.
What's the deal?
When you're in the mood for live jazz and some great Cajun food, head south to Covington's Dee Felice Cafe. Established in 1984 by its namesake, the late drummer Dee Felice, the restaurant's Web site boasts "huge portions, reasonable prices, and short waits during weekend dinners." It's the truth. Even at 8 p.m. on a Saturday, when Bill Gemmer and the New Sleepcat Band are swinging on the stage behind the bar, service is prompt and dishes are overwhelmingly large. (Reservations are recommended here.)
Grab a seat at the bar and watch the band up close or take a table in the dining room for a more intimate meal. Try Cajun favorites such as jambalaya, crawfish etouffee or file gumbo in this renovated 18th century pharmacy. With its candlelit dining room, Dee Felice is an ideal date restaurant, but the food, music and ambiance make it an ideal restaurant for a night out with a group of friends.

Perfect for?
Jazz lovers and anyone looking for a great meal at a good price in a welcoming and energetic atmosphere

Where to get it?
529 Main St, Covington
859-261-2365‎

How much?
Appetizers start at $6.95; entrees cost $12.95-$20.95, but half portions ($8.95-$9.95) are available, and the kitchen is happy to split generous portions. Wine by the glass starts at $5.25. Bottles range $19-$82. (On Mondays, appetizers and wine by the glass or bottle are half-price!)

The official start of the farmshed season at Findlay Market
(although many vendors have attended occasionally throughout the winter
depending on what they had available) is this coming Saturday, April
19th from 8 - 6. I contacted the attending farmshed and outdoor
vendors and asked them what they'd be bringing to market on opening
day. Many vendors will also be offering a raffle item for the Farmshed
Spring Kickoff. Raffle tickets can be purchased from the individual
vendors.

BuyCincy is venturing into a new area of local businesses; locally owned restaurants and bars. And to kick it all off, BuyCincy is pleased to present a look at Jean-Robert's new Wine Bar/Bistro, Lavomatic, as they work to put the finishing touches together for their opening on Tuesday, February 26th. Hit the jump to go to the Flavor page for all the details.

As fans of the Gateway Quarter, great food, and fine wine, we at BuyCincy have been anxiously awaiting the opening of Lavomatic. Well this coming Tuesday, 2/26 is the day we have been waiting for.

What's the deal: As a Wine Bar and Bistro, Lavomatic will feature a French inspired menu of "rustic," "home grown" food, as well as a wide variety of wines. Lavomatic will feature 25-28 wines by the glass, including flights. A flight of wine is a grouping of three or four wines, each of which will be presented with information about the featured wines. Flights may also be paired with special menu selections. While we are not able to reveal actual menu items, we can tell you the food, like the wine, will have a local flare. Chef Joanne Drilling, and General Manager Burke Morton are working with local vendors (including Findley Market) to bring in the freshest locally grown ingredients.

As a side note, to show Lavomatic's commitment to the Gateway Quarter, much of the furniture and decor came from their neighbors MiCA and Metronation.

One of coolest features about Lavomatic is the roof-top terrace which will be open in warmer weather for dining and relaxing with a glass of wine.

How much will it cost: Wine prices will vary. Entree prices will range from $14 - $21.00.

Where to find them: Lavomatic is located on Vine St. in the Gateway Quarter next to Metronation (with a convenient pass-through door to shop while you wait for a table).

The kitchen will be open Sunday through Thursday 11:00 to 9:30, Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 10:30 (including Brunch)

We got a heads up from Stepfanie over at The Foodie Report (who was kind enough to send psychic vibes our way) that Hathaway's at Carew Tower will reopen on Monday with a new and improved space and revamped menu.

New owner Chris Bronger made over the decor, and the menu is still full
of diner standards and comfort foods, with breakfast items, burgers and
malts.
Bronger resurrected the Hathaway's specialty salad - a scoop
of cottage cheese with yogurt, coconut, walnuts, raisins, fruit and
apricot dressing. He also added steak and eggs, a mushroom-and-Swiss
burger and a couple of healthier choices, a grilled chicken salad and
sandwich.

We're anxious to know what the new space looks like. Let us know in the comments!
Word out of the Downtown's Resident Council meeting is Javier's, one of our favorite lunchtime spots, is attempting to get a liquor license for their Walnut St. location. The request was given to the DRC for input, with the council giving the plan a thumbs up.

One would have to assume that if approved, the Mexican eatery would move from a lunchtime-only restaurant into one open for dinner. We are all for adding another affordable dinner option downtown, but this might mean more time on the treadmill every week. If this happens, it is going to be hard to resist going to Javier's multiple times a week, especially for the BuyCincy staffer located exactly two blocks away (that would be yours truly).
