When you order at Cilantro Vietnamese Bistro, you may think with a mixture of relief and disappointment that you've managed to snag soup and Vermicelli at one of the only layman-friendly Vietnamese restaurants in the city. Don't dwell on it for too long, though, because you've still got to decide what kind of spices you want; your desired sauces or dressings; what kind of noodles, etc, etc. As you munch later on, you might try to count what other Cincinnati Vietnamese restaurants you had ordered this dish from; we promise you won't need to relinquish your chopsticks hand to add it up. ]]>
You can order in or take your food with you at Cilantro. The menu is diverse and highly customizable, but far from daunting. In a similar vein, the prices are great for college budgets (anywhere from ~$2-$6). The final reason you should check this place out? It's healthy, and vegan friendly.

Northside: Farmers Market Starts June 4

Buy Cincy spends many a weekend in Northside at the fabulous local restaurants (Melt, Slims, Honey...) and the eclectic businesses (ShakeIt Records, Bughouse Video, Casablanca Vintage Clothing Store...). Add some of the city's coolest bars (the Comet, the Gypsy Hut, and of course, Northside Tavern), and you've got a great place to play.

Soon, we'll be hanging out there on Wednesday nights, too, when the Northside Farmers Market opens for the season.

In addition to seasonal produce grown locally (everything from raspberries to pecans!), expect free events and live music, plus Shadeau bread and fresh local cheese. For those who prefer to grow their own, they'll find perennials, annuals and fresh herbs ready for planting.

This year -- the market's seventh season -- local artists, seamstresses and soap makers will be selling locally produced products.

On opening day (June 4), hear free live music by Peter Adams and members of Nocturnal Collective and Baoku and the Image Afro Beat Band.

Other June events include Moonshine Drive, a bluegrass band, on June 18 and 25. Gorman Farms hosts children's activities on June 25 and July 30.

This is the Thumrongthaisakul's first restaurant, but they've already developed a crew of regulars. "We have people that call, order one item off the menu, and say, 'Just make me something good,' and I make them one of my specialties or try something new." Likit paused before adding, "They really like it that way." For those of you looking for a similar adventure, the menu features 21 "Chef Special Rolls," almost all of which are Likit's own creation. The rest of the menu features an assortment of very fresh dishes that we're sure you'll enjoy.

Don't let the "Express" in the title confuse you, Maki strives to combine its speed and affordability with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We at BuyCincy are glad to see this "ma and pop" store go into its third year of service. Stop by for a quick lunch or dinner and we're sure you'll agree.

The Coffee Shop on Madison: O'Bryonville's new kid on the block

O'Bryonville, that quaint strip of Madison Road wedged between Walnut Hills and Hyde Park, is BuyCincy's kind of place: Independent, locally owned and operated businesses as far as the eye can see. Some of these businesses (The BonBonerie, Bob Roncker's Running Spot and others) have been there for decades, and we look forward to working our way down the strip. But it's one of O'Bryonville's newest businesses that caught our eye recently, The Coffee Shop on Madison.

]]> What's the deal?

Owner Pat Wynne opened The Coffee Shop on Madison last April. He was drawn to O'Bryonville and its unique, established businesses. (We are, too. It's just so... quaint, cute and, well, local!) Wynne sells organic and fair trade coffees that he gets from a second-generation roaster in California. His is the only place east of the Rocky Mountains where you can get the coffee.

My personal favorite is the Hawaiian Hazelnut... No cream or sugar, please. Drink it straight. You'll thank BuyCincy later.

If you're a tea drinker, we recommend you try one of the fruit or blooming teas. In search of something cool? We hear the smoothies are pretty darn good.

The Coffee Shop also sells Zingerman's sour cream cakes and others sweets, plus locally made pastries and American spoon preserves. And, if that wasn't enough, he sells THE waffles, and they're made to order on site. Not familiar with THE waffles? They're Jean-François Flechet's Belgian waffles, which - to be fair and honest - can be found in other local coffee shops, too. (More on Jean-François and his sinfully delicious waffles soon, we promise!) If atmosphere is most important to you, you're in luck. The Coffee Shop has an entire collection of bright and whimsical Charley Harpers on display, plus a "secret garden" out back, with four tables. (And they just got three parking spaces, which is a big deal in a shopping district such as O'Bryonville.)

This unique hybrid pale ale is an old pre-refrigeration Moerlein recipe which accounts for the extra hops, which were used as a preservative in that time period. Slightly hoppy with a fair amount of sweet malts provide an exciting taste making it our most popular draft. OTR stands for Over-the-Rhine, but hopefully that is not news as it is also your present location. 6.0% ABV

Brewed from Moerlein's original recipe, Barbarossa is the first pre-prohibition lager that they ever made. This double-dark lager has slightly grainy malts and a light, crisp body with hops that bring a faint but pleasant bitterness. Barbarossa is yet another tasty brew from Moerlein. Paulaner Hefe-weizen
Lots of malt greet the nose, with hints of lemon to come and some grassy hops. The taste confirms the lemon, which is pleasant and not overbearing, while biscuit flavored malt predominates. This pilsner has won a ridiculous amount of awards, and for good reasons. Heaps of hops give this pale lager a bracing, herbal bite over layers of soft and smooth malt flavor. This makes Prima a classy quencher in the tradition of great European pilsners. Dry and delightful, this is an elegant beer. 5.3% ABV. You look classier already.

Victory Golden Monkey
Strong and sensual, this golden, Belgian-style ale glows with goodness. The richness of German malts and Belgian yeast are tempered by a sparkling approach and overall light body. When you're in the mood for live jazz and some great Cajun food, head south to Covington's Dee Felice Cafe. Established in 1984 by its namesake, the late drummer Dee Felice, the restaurant's Web site boasts "huge portions, reasonable prices, and short waits during weekend dinners." It's the truth. Even at 8 p.m. on a Saturday, when Bill Gemmer and the New Sleepcat Band are swinging on the stage behind the bar, service is prompt and dishes are overwhelmingly large. (Reservations are recommended here.)
Grab a seat at the bar and watch the band up close or take a table in the dining room for a more intimate meal. Try Cajun favorites such as jambalaya, crawfish etouffee or file gumbo in this renovated 18th century pharmacy. Cafe Riverside: A Korean tea and sweet shop

What's the deal?

For fans of Riverside Korean Restaurant in Covington, BuyCincy has some fabulous news: Cafe Riverside, a Korean tea and pastry shop, opens Monday in the former Mad Cup at 514 Madison Ave. in Covington. The cafe will serve about a dozen varieties of tea, plus coffee and Korean baked goods -- think walnut buns, sweet rice cakes and red bean fillings*. At night, expect Korean wine and dessert wines, plus appetizers from the adjoining restaurant.

Cafe Riverside is owned by Mark Jang, who also owns Riverside. Cafe Riverside will serve two purposes: Accommodate overflow crowds on weekends and expose Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky to a different side of Korean culture.

]]> The restaurant is traditionally appointed with Korean relics, while the cafe -- Jang hired a Korean carpenter and designer -- will showcase a sleeker, modern Korea. (BuyCincy can attest to the authenticity. We spent a year in Seoul.)

Jang has also installed a "norae bang," or singing room, for Asian-style karaoke. He expects it to be popular for birthday parties and groups out for dinner at Riverside. The room can accommodate about 10 people, he said.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. weekends. A Web site is coming soon.

BuyCincy is venturing into a new area of local businesses; locally owned restaurants and bars. And to kick it all off, BuyCincy is pleased to present a look at Jean-Robert's new Wine Bar/Bistro, Lavomatic, as they work to put the finishing touches together for their opening on Tuesday, February 26th. ]]> As fans of the Gateway Quarter, great food, and fine wine, we at BuyCincy have been anxiously awaiting the opening of Lavomatic. Well this coming Tuesday, 2/26 is the day we have been waiting for.

What's the deal: As a Wine Bar and Bistro, Lavomatic will feature a French inspired menu of "rustic," "home grown" food, as well as a wide variety of wines. Lavomatic will feature 25-28 wines by the glass, including flights. A flight of wine is a grouping of three or four wines, each of which will be presented with information about the featured wines. Flights may also be paired with special menu selections. While we are not able to reveal actual menu items, we can tell you the food, like the wine, will have a local flare. Chef Joanne Drilling, and General Manager Burke Morton are working with local vendors (including Findley Market) to bring in the freshest locally grown ingredients.

As a side note, to show Lavomatic's commitment to the Gateway Quarter, much of the furniture and decor came from their neighbors MiCA and Metronation.

One of coolest features about Lavomatic is the roof-top terrace which will be open in warmer weather for dining and relaxing with a glass of wine.

How much will it cost: Wine prices will vary. Entree prices will range from $14 - $21.00.

Where to find them: Lavomatic is located on Vine St. in the Gateway Quarter next to Metronation (with a convenient pass-through door to shop while you wait for a table).

The kitchen will be open Sunday through Thursday 11:00 to 9:30, Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 10:30 (including Brunch)

Hathaway's Upgrades Space

We got a heads up from Stepfanie over at The Foodie Report (who was kind enough to send psychic vibes our way) that Hathaway's at Carew Tower will reopen on Monday with a new and improved space and revamped menu.

New owner Chris Bronger made over the decor, and the menu is still full of diner standards and comfort foods, with breakfast items, burgers and malts.
Bronger resurrected the Hathaway's specialty salad - a scoop of cottage cheese with yogurt, coconut, walnuts, raisins, fruit and apricot dressing. He also added steak and eggs, a mushroom-and-Swiss burger and a couple of healthier choices, a grilled chicken salad and sandwich.

Dinner at Javier's?

Word out of the Downtown's Resident Council meeting is Javier's, one of our favorite lunchtime spots, is attempting to get a liquor license for their Walnut St. location. The request was given to the DRC for input, with the council giving the plan a thumbs up.

One would have to assume that if approved, the Mexican eatery would move from a lunchtime-only restaurant into one open for dinner. We are all for adding another affordable dinner option downtown, but this might mean more time on the treadmill every week. If this happens, it is going to be hard to resist going to Javier's multiple times a week, especially for the BuyCincy staffer located exactly two blocks away (that would be yours truly).
