Local Beer Stand Gets Bigger, Badder and Better Than Ever

lips to remind you how sexy it is? Does it need to be remodeled, painted red or
offer bacon ice cream to get you excited? I’m talking bout Dutch’s Wine
Merchant and Beer Dock on Erie Avenue in Hyde Park. Sure it’s been around for
60 years and yeah it’s kind of a hole in the wall. But next time your walking
to the neighboring UDF for a double dip of frozen yogurt or a 4-pack of toilet
paper, stop and appreciate it for what it is — mature, tasteful, and undeniably
interesting.

The Wine Merchants of Venice

There’s nothing I look more forward to than a spring evening on my deck with friends sharing an excellent bottle of wine. To find this excellent bottle of wine, the first and typically only place I go is The Wine Merchant. The staff is friendly and very helpful, especially when you are trying to pair a particular dish to a wine.  The last time I visited I needed both a bottle of white and red wine for a pizza extravaganza at my friend’s house. The recommendations for an Italian Chianti and Pinot Grigio were perfect.  My favorite wine for spring, which I discovered in Portugal last year, is vinho verde.  Vinho Verde wines are considered “green wines” because they come from very young grapes and the wine has a bit of effervescence to it like a sparking wine but not quite. To my surprise, The Wine Merchant carried 2-3 varieties of vinho verde, my favorite being Gazela, which at only $6.99 is a bargain.
